Far from it. Thorton said he loved playing here. Rumour has it that
Willy Nelson told him to pack it up. He doesn't want a prick and the
associated bad publicity following him along.

I like Willy Nelson. Jennings was also good.

Note that SOME people don't even know how to spell the juvenile
*******'s name. Sad.

I have an XP setup at work. That provides all the entertainment I can
handle. A few more intrusions / crashes and they'll start leaning more
towards a Linux (Open Source) based operation.

An acquaintance has recently pulled Vista from his machine and went back
to XP. Vista is as bad as Windows ME.

If a car builder ever sold such defective products, they'd be sued out
of existence in a few weeks. Why do people accept defective software?

They don't anymore, there is Linux and other systems. I run the
updated version of IBM/OS/2(eCS) and have no problems running any
program that allows me to use the web, etc. Too many people just
accept what is loaded on their computer without thinking about the
alternatives.

I use Ubuntu Linux. It's a different world. Like PBS vs Fox.

I use that on my own machines. The Debian base feels more suited for my
use than an RPM based system. There are frequent security updates and
I've never had a virus.

Neither has the computer, for that matter...

Mike,
Speaking of Ubuntu, downloaded the 8.10 version, installed it and
could not, for any reason, get the Network Manager to connect me to my
DHCP router. I heard that this is a problem. Everything else looked
nice, but no internet connectivity! I went on the Linux forums and
this is a problem that they say is being fixed in the 9.04 release. I
have a separate NIC card, no onboard, and old 3Com, it shows up, but
no go. What did you do to connect?

I don't know. It just works. I'm using a separate card too. The
connectivity was there when I was installing 8.10

First I checked the menu in 'System' "preferences' 'Network Connection'.
The 'wired' option has the Auto ETH0 setting.

Editing that shows you the 'Wired' tab. You MAC address should show up.
That is the address of your network card. I have the 'system setting'
checked here ONLY.

Under the 802.1 tab, there is nothing checked.
Under the IP4 Settings tab, only the Automatic (DHCP) is selected.

Under 'System' 'Preferences' 'Network Proxy', I have "direct internet
connection' checked off.

Was the Card connected to a modem at the time of installation?

I'd try a re-installation.

Try unpowering the modem for half a minute so that it has to get a lease
from the provider. That sometimes resets the DHCP numbers in the machine.

Installing 'Firestarter' and resetting the firewall rules may also help.
Firestarter is meant for mere mortals and sets the firewall rules in an
understandable fashion.

These sites will be of more help than I have been.
