Software Defined Receivers (SDR) Questions

Hi,

Just curious:

How popular are these software defined receivers (SDR) these days for
general
sw listening in the price range of, say, up to $ 1,500 ? The kind that work
with one's PC.

Haven't thought about them in quite a while.

Is WinRadio still the standard for these kind of things, or are there now
others also offering them, that are comparable, or better ?

Still, there's something really nice about twisting knobs, I guess, but this
old fashioned concept really dates me.

For a $ 1,500 budget what would you get ? Why ?

(for MIL and AM up to 30 MHz mainly; possibly some VHF/UHF if capable)

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

I do believe the WinRadio units offer excellent value and features in
their receivers. A friend of mine recently invested in the WR-G305i,
and he has nothing but praise for it. Along with a frequency range of
9 kHz to 1800 MHz, the WR-G305i also has a software-defined VHF/UHF
receiver on a PCI bus card. The spectrum analyser (real time) is a
real positive and a DRM decoder is also available as an extra option
to provide some added grunt to the unit.

Definitely worth a look Bob as I'm pretty certain something like this
would well and truly suit your needs.

Kind regards,
Brian

I'm not familiar with the setup, but I have heard of a unit known as a
Perseus(sp) which a number of DX'ers are using.

Not to fan any flames, hopefully the "smoke" is
now gone. Can you believe this group now? People
actually asking radio/antenna questions and people actually
answering them? :-D

**THIS** is what makes this group great so great IMO.

Check out the Ten-Tec RX-320D:

The price is right and the performance very good. There is even a
Linux GUI control program for it, rx320.

This is going to be my next purchase. I will use my $205 Asus netbook
to control it.
