When is DX Season going to come to South Florida?

It has been so damn hot here, I wish for the cool/cold, clear nights,
with all the MW stations booming in. Now, it is only local crap, mostly
overridden by Cubans. South Florida is the pits for radio DX. If you
want Cubans or the Caribbean, then it is OK, but for everything else,
forget about it.

If you used small loops or phased arrays of active verticals, etc., you
could slice those interfering Cubans away.

I have a couple of loops, but the Cubans are on all the good frequencies!
880, 1210, 660, and other East Coast stations. I have the CCrane SW radio,
the clone of the Redsun RP-2100, and my boatanchors, HQ-145XC, HE-30.
The locals hog: 560, 610,740,760 950, 960, 980, 1000,1450,1580, and that is
not even the whole list! My loop can be effective to some extent. How
about the CCrane powered Dual Ferrite Loop? Anyone have any experience with
that? Wish that the Kiwa Loop was still being made.

Hi are you trying to DX AM? or Shortwave?

I love the Crane radios, I've had a CC Radio since 2000. On AM DX, I'm
finding that the HD hash is making a noisy mess.

Here in the Ma, I was able to pull in WLW Cincinatti every night for
years so clearly on my CC Radio, it was as if were a local
station. For the last two years or so, I'm just getting a hash sound,
unless atmospheric conditions are perfect.

On my restored tube radios, I use a Select A Tenna.

Both, but mainly AM DX. Trying to get as many states as I can!

I have that one also, the passive loop? Tried that with my boatanchors,

with them. The Select A Tenna works well with the CCrane, and with my

Have you noticed that hash sound more and more?

Around 1977 I was staying with my Grandmother in Hallandale Florida, I
picked up WBZ Boston.I was using a Lafayette Gaurdian 7000, that got
in 1973. That radio is still playing like it did when it was new. I
use it everyday.

My hobby is restoring vintage tube radios. I adore tube radios, I have
1946 Zenith 6D029 playing in the kitchen right now.

I use the Select A Tenna as a way to null the inference from the under
the counter halogen lights.

I mentioned in a previous post that my gave me an all leather and wood
Roberts Revival Radio. Very expensive. I planned to concoct an excuse
to send it back, after I took it out the box, I fell in love with it.
Usually I have no interest in anything repro, this radio picks up
everything! It has a continuously back lighted dial even when its on
batteries.
To me it all the qualities of a vintage radio. It really stands on its
own.My wife got it from Crane. She saw me eyeing it in the catalog.
Its a great DX'ng radio.

Yes, the interference is huge down here in South Florida, not so much
where I am, only one mile from the ocean in a small coastal town.
Yes, those "revival" radios are neat! We got one, with a CD hidden
under a hinged lid, a Crosley, with the old aircraft-style tuning dial,
back lamp, cloth covered grill, etc. When playing 30's or 40's CDs, it
is like a time machine, coming out of the speaker!
Have not tried it yet for "real" radio listening, have too many others!
Wish that I had an old Console Radio that my Grandparents had in the
30's and 40's, and that I still remember being in the living room. My
Grandpa put it out beside the curb one day in the early 60's for the
junk guy! Did the same thing with our 1952 RCA TV, beautiful cabinet,
doors covering the set, etc. Out to the curb when he got a "new" 21"
round tube GE Color TV, again in the early 60's. Breaks my heart now.

The Roberts R250 is made of real leather on wood, its stunning.Great
sound. Some owners don't like the sound.

I'm in the process of restoring my aunts 1941 RCA console. She gave it
to me when I was 15 back in 1970.

All the rotted rubber wires had to be replaced, I'm almost done with
that part of it. My experience has been restoring simple AM table
radios, this is the most complicated one I've done. I hope when I
finally test it, I don't burn the house down.

I'm glad there is a thread on the Roberts. When Crane sent me their
newest catalogue....that was
the radio that caught my eyes.

But it sounds like from CF that it has overload
problems? What type of filtering does that piece
have?

It definitely looks sharp but I don't make a radio
purchase based on just looks.

Ha, ain't gonna happen. ;-) A great setup for that
particular piece though is to either make or buy
your own table. There is nothing to it, if I can do
it (trust me) anyone can.

By that I mean, just have the table part itself
rotate while the pole/legs don't move. That's
what I have and IMO is my main piece for my
BCB DX setup. If I would have thought before
I finished it - - I would have included a ballbearing
collar where the table sits atop the pole but it
never crossed my mind. But it rotates smoothly
enough now the way it is with no grab, I can just picture it now with
a ballbearing collar, sweet.

Hi,

It was not my intention to go on and on about the Roberts R250, but as
I said I was going to concoct an excuse to return it as to not insult
my wife, it was a birthday present. After taking out of the box, and
using it, I had to keep it. No way was I sending it back. Mine is blue
and is real leather. It still has that new leather aroma. It has a
very solid feel.
Not everyone agrees, but I like the sound it has. It has an old tube
radio sound.

Yes, its just a radio..but in this case looks did matter and it
performs. Its very sensitive on AM and FM. I'd rather they provided a
Shortwave band instead of the the LW, but I've been goofing around
with that.

The back lighted dial stays lighted continuously. A really nice
feature in a portable radio.

When I want to give the tube radios a break, the Roberts fills in the
gap nicely.

Yep. That is the ultimate setup, can't beat it. I
don't have that particular antenna, don't need it
but any loop with a turntable is where it's at.
I use my GE SR II on a turntable.

I'm not all that much of a MW'er, but it does come in handy.

I received WLS at 4 PM one winter afternoon in Bryan Texas. I used an
original Select A Tenna and a Magnavox (Philips) AE3805 $50 radio.

I read somewhere, that these antennas would improve sw reception, is that
true ?

No. They work from 530 to 1710 kHz.

If I could find a lazy susan that would hold my HQ-145

Didn't they make furniture like that in the '50s? Coffee tables with
huge lazy susans on it for moving around bowls of snacks?
