Peshawar, Feb.7 (ANI): Radio Pakistan has decided to discontinue the Voice of America's (VOA) Pushto-language programmes following a threat from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The VOA launched its Pushto-language radio station, 'Deeva Radio', in 2009, targeting audience in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and other tribal areas. "The Radio Pakistan central management ended its agreement with the VOA in light of the terror threats and political pressure, as many local listeners went to the (print) media to force the government to cancel the agreement," The Daily Times quoted a senior producer at Radio Pakistan Peshawar, as saying. "The Taliban and other anti-American groups in the country threatened to bomb the Radio Pakistan Peshawar premises if the station continued airing Deeva Radio programmes," he said on conditions of anonymity. However, Radio Pakistan Director General Murtaza Solangi said the broadcast was cancelled on mutual agreement between the state broadcaster and the VOA. (ANI) |

I doubt if the US would shut down a station over a threat from the Taliban. And they could simply broadcast from Afghanistan into NW Pakistan without much trouble. Kim Elliot does state it is true, but only the Pushto MW transmission directed at NW Frontier Province. The Peshawar Urdu language FM is not affected. As our long time contributor RHF has stated last year, Radio Deewa had a program on 9370 KHz. How would the Taliban know where it comes from? |

Just thinking in terms of plane and 3D geometry. Still, HF signals bounce off the ionosphere and are highly volatile as a result. Oops. This is weird. Just looked up the history Wullenweber of AN/FLR-9 from the 50's. The original contract was to have GTE-Sylvania to construct one antenna array in ...Pakistan! Guess, it was not considered to be safe enough territory even back in those days and the project was scratched. Good decision, thanks God. |

He is simply saying that an Indian news source may well have some bias (and thus should be taken with a grain of salt) when reporting on anything related to Pakistan. Do YOU trust an Indian news source when it relates to news about a sworn enemy? I'd be skeptical. That being said, it's pretty hard to find an unbiased news source anywhere these days. Maybe it has been true forever, but I cannot be sure, not having lived that long (yet) ;-) Bruce |

BBC is still remarkably quite objective, despite all the shenanigans that it has been experiencing lately. R.Netherlands is another good source with very minor ethnocentric tendencies, but it is so negligible in comparison to the majority of of broadcasts on HF as well as the internet and other mass media. |
