They contain about 4 mg of mercury, much less mercury than a coal
burning power plant spews into the atmosphere making the extra
electricity needed to heat up the air around your 19th century wizardry
bulb. *Instead of concentrating the mercury in an easily recycled glass
envelope, your coal plants distribute mercury for a thousand square
miles.

How do CFLs result in less Mercury in the Environment
compared to traditional Light Bulbs ?
http://www.energystar.gov/ia/partner...et_Mercury.pdf
* CFL Bulb : Total Life Cycle Mercury 1.6 mg
* Incandescent Bulb : Total Life Cycle Mercury 5.5 mg

Nah...CFLs have a -minimal- amount of mercury in them -- and if the CFL
isn't broken, it's a non-issue.

Just for the record, the standard 4 foot fluorescent bulb has a lot more
mercury than the CFL...and nobody is wetting their pants about them.

BTW, got any amalgam fillings in your teeth? They contain mercury -- and
most of us are still here to talk about it.

Had a tuna fish sandwich for lunch? Tuna is -full- of mercury.

IMHO, CFLs are near the bottom of the list of our mercury worries.

I bought several years supply.
Also a dozen 'appliance' bulbs for range and fridge.
And some S11 profile E17 base 10watt incandescents for hobby (Keystone

I wonder if there are going to be exemptions for specialty bulbs?
Let's say slide projector 500 watts lamps?
There isn't going to be LED and CFL for those old timers.
And ditto for those teeny size 49 for Philco radio dials?

As long as energy is priced fairly (i.e. remove all subsidies including
military support for stealing oil from poor people and bribes) the true
cost will steer people toward efficiency. There is no need to go door to

I switched to CFL bulbs a long time ago and have never looked back. I
was going through incandescent bulbs like crazy. It drove me nuts to
be replacing bulbs all the time. I switched to CFL bulbs many months
ago and have yet to replace one. I don't know if they'll last as long
as the marketing info says they will, but they last one heck of a lot
longer than incandescent bulbs. And *zero* RFI.
