You don't have to do everything at once. A 30-70 ft antenna will get
you started receiving enough signals. When you are comfortable and
enjoying the fact you can make your own, expand and improve ... at
least, that is how I did it.

One of my old off the wall brand name AM/FM/Shortwave table
model/portable Goodwill store radios,,, a bunch of years ago, I
connected an old raggity 100 feet long extension line/cord to that
radio.It did sort of help, a little bit anyway.

Actually, that is not a bad starting point. Will allow a newbie to get
the feel, have some success and decide if it is a hobby he would like to
pursue and get deeper into!

But, rather pricey for a few feet of wire ...

Try a small mono jack (don't force it) to connect with the socket
labeled AM EXT ANT . It is next to the telescoping antenna. That is
the input,as far as I know.

talk radio and was able to finesse such an empire out of it, that I think Noory
is simply trying to outdo or one up the tradition, even if he routinely goes

Actually, and overall, I'd say Alex has it about 80% correct!

I got one a few months ago and use it for the same purpose.

I frequently listen to talk radio and had a large loop beside the bed,
against the wall.

Wife came home with that little thing and I laughed at it.

However, I hooked it up to show her it would not be sufficient -- and
had to eat my words ... :-( It sets in a window and is fed from the
jack provided on the loop ... works better than the mutual coupling method.

The larger, homemade loop beats it, but I don't do real DX beside the
bed, so it is just fine. Allows me to get KGO in san fransicko with
VERY minimal fading (difficult without a loop from my location and KGO's
antenna orientation towards their desired audience.)

Get as much wire as that wad will buy
and run it as far and high away from the house as possible.

I missed the part about being in a suburb so my suggestion,
while best for rural, probably wouldn't work out too well.

How about a nice MFJ-1024 active whip for outside?

I have to use the jack coupling method with the E1
(no internal ferrite)

Allows me to get KGO

I only get them at night absent the 'D' layer absorbtion
and at this distance (about 500 miles)
reception is more a factor of propagation than selectivity
but the loop does seem to beat the whip.

You could get them all day in the dead of winter until KABC's and KLAA's
IBOC transmissions covered them up.
