AFN OTA Television is no more

As of some time on the night of April 30, AFN Korea ceased programming,
leaving only a still of the WTC1 workers putting in the girder that made the
edifice the tallest building in NYC. That still (with no audio) remained
until early yesterday afternoon, at which time they threw the switch and
killed the signals. This marks the last OTA television signal for AFRTS
anywhere in the world. AFN Korea was the last such system extant, as Korea
is the last country still using the NTSC television system. All other NTSC
broadcasts will end in Korea sometime in 2014. AFN has no intention of
installing ATSC HDTV plants, and will instead continue serving troops,
contractors and their families using base cable systems and DTS/DTH
satellite.

AFN Korea plants covered bases in Dongducheon, Uijeongbu, Seoul, Osan,
Pyeongtaek, Daegu, Chinhae and Busan, mostly using low power UHF
transmitters. I'll post a link to the still I recorded (not great quality, I
long ago disconnected my UHF antenna for the local AFN channel, so was using
just a Sony Hi-8 TV-recorder off it's own antenna.
