Very interesting. Even more interesting is the relative dearth of
media coverage of how Icelanders dealt with the finance vultures who
destroyed their nation.

Hooray for Iceland!

It's true, there have been few references in the media to Iceland's
successful counter-offensive, though it's likely that the new Greek
government haven't forgotten it. (They may also be making contingency
plans for producing their own currency, something which Spain and Italy
would watch with interest.)

Whatever happens can hardly not undermine the European Union. I still
support a lot of the ideas behind the EU's foundation, but its
institutions have become so corrupted by banking, military and
multinational business interests that it needs at least reform and
probably revolution.

It would be good if this crisis prompted the EU to become more
democratic, but it's not heading that way now. Perhaps the best we can
hope for is that the people of Europe don't allow themselves to be
manipulated into the kind of brainless conflicts which have historically
bedevilled the continent, and that instead they turn against those who
would enslave them from within.

(Ironic sound byte on either the BEEB or NPR (insomnia radio, so I'm
not sure).

There's a new leftwards party rising in the polls in Spain. The leader
of that and the new Greek PM are friends, having met as members of the
EU Parliment a number of years ago.
