Kids killing kids: this gotta stop...
Reality is most kids killed by guns are killed over
drugs, or are killed just due to gang violence in
general.
And of course quite a few kids die in auto accidents.
Down the list a ways are the mass shootings.
But the shooters know that what they do makes everyone
sit up and take notice.
What do you do? Ban press coverage?
One consideration is that the kids are aware
of the shootings and may be convinced that guns
are bad. So they might make different decisions
down the road than their parents are regarding
2nd amendment rights.
The sad thing is that if Clinton had not had
assault weapons banned no one would have learned
about the easy availability of AR-15's and they
might have remained niche products indefinitely.
And around here - gun country - sportsmen point
out that there is really little difference
between an assault weapon and the semiautomatics
they use for hunting except: smaller bored (and
therefore, in certain ways, possessing less
"stopping power"); shorter; and lighter. It
is true that large magazines are available as
well, but that is not so much a matter of weapon
design as it is one of weapon add-ons.
I am told that the .223 AR-15 is less accurate
than a .30 caliber M1 or M14, and therefore was
rejected by the military for quite some time.
But eventually the military accepted that in
today's conflicts there really is a need for a
slightly less accurate weapon which is effective
at short range, and for which, in addition, larger
quantities of ammunition may be carried without
overburdening the soldier.
Happens all the time around here. Mehico is
probaly a lot safer.
Just don't get in the way of the druglords. And
keep your head down.
