Sangean ATS-505P vs. YB-400PE...

"rtc" wrote...
Hello,
Grove has both on sale and would appreciate
it if any of you who have used them would
comment on your preference.
Main concern is build quality-the YB has a QC
"problem",while some say the 505 feels "cheap".
Thanks in advance for your time.

I have both (with the Sangean as a Radio Shack DX-402)
The YB400 has better SSB and is my favorite of all my radios.
The DX-402 is sensitive off the whip and I rarely use my portable
antenna with it. SSB is not so good on the 402/505
If I had to choose I would take a YB400. They both have good MW
DX for my needs... I can hear MW stations 1000+ miles with either of them late
at night... expecially in winter.
That isn't much help I guess, but others here will add to what I've said
and make it more clear. I'd be willing to bet they also say get the
YB400... but if you can get the Sangean *dirt cheap* (look for RS DX-402
on eBay maybe) and don't care
that much about SSB it is a very functional radio, and as I said
mine is great using only the built in telescoping antenna for SW.
YB400 if the prices are close or the Sangean is more expensive

Get the YB-400.

At the risk of not answering your answer directly....if you are
interested in sideband reception, I wouldn't go for either of these
radios. That is the weak point of both.

Here is a link to a review of the 909 / 400PE / 7600g.'

check the Endless Debate review.

There is also a separate review on the Sangean at radiointel

I have had both of the radios you are asking about. For a few bucks
more, you will have a better radio. If you have to pick between the
two, go for the 400PE.

good luck

This (your?) review is very useful, but I must point out that it is a
review of the 7600g, not the 7600gr. In many places, edits have been
made to acknowledge the improved features of the gr, but not in all
places.

The review finally decides for the 7600g. Add in the gr improvements
and it should be a bigger win for sideband performance.

Col. Yurin,

You are correct, it is based on the 7600g. I pointed out the
differences I was aware of (to the GR). Let me know what I missed and
we will update the article.

Thanx

Russ,

There isn't much. I guess my impression was that by mentioning the GR
improvements in a sentence at the end of each paragraph, after
describing in more detail the lack of same within the paragraph, it
seemed like the current Sony was getting short shrift. (Even though it
won.)

Here are the points I noticed on reading through it again:

* Sleep setting is variable in 15 minute increments from 15 to 60 min.

* There are two clocks, for local and UTC.

* There is a daylight savings time button.

* The alarm can be radio or a 3 minute beeping alarm.

* Alarm presets do not have to be from memory, giving the radio 102
memories total. What is good about this is that the alarm buttons
become, when the radio is on, single button memories: simply hitting
the alarm button (standby) for A or B will instantly take you to that
frequency.

* When scanning, it pauses for 3 seconds on a signal and then
continues scanning to end of band.
