Thinking About Upgrade
Depends on what kind of DX'ing you want to do. Both are good radios.
Have you considered a used radio such as a Drake R8 or ICOM R71 ...both are Great receivers and will cost around the same as a new Grundig 800 Shawn RickH wrote: Hello I currently have a Sony 2010. That's a very good question. I like the S-800 better, but mainly for

Best Wishes Rick H Comparing the two: The Grundig has superior sound and much better bandwidths. The wide bandwidth on the Grundig is very useful whereas on the Sony it is too wide. The medium bandwidth on the Grundig is slightly tighter than the narrow bandwidth on the Sony. The Grundig has the advantage of a 2.3 narrow bandwidth which really helps on SSB. Both are about equal on sensitivity. I prefer the sync detector on the Grundig. When using an external antenna, the Grundig will perform better since it will not overload as easy and has much better dynamic range and blocking abilities. I am from Austia, Europe, and I've been given told that the 800 from Grundig is the weakest receiver of the Satellite product range. Almost every review gives very bad reports and recommends to buy rather a Sony. They also argumented that this lack of quality is the reason why Grundig Germany (Fuerth) and almost every radio-shacks are not willing to distribute this product in Europe. You only can purchase this product by importing directly form the U.S. I have to add that all test-reviews based on the "Grundig Satellite 800 Millenium Edition". Maybe here we have some different version of the 800 we are talking about. Otherwise I can not explain myself the different point of views between the U.S. and Europe on the same product. I'm really asthonished that there is a different meaning about the Staellit 800 between the U.S. and Europe. If this receiver is as good as you and the reviews are describing I wonder why this product is not still distributed in Europe (espacially into Germany & Austria). Maybe there is a company-policy behind as I've heard that Grundig Germany has nothing in common with Grundig in the USA. Although, thanks for your comment. In its price range the Grundig Satellit 800 Millennium is the 'best' Broadcast Listeners Radio/Receiver. Yes, he GS800M has have some quality problems on the earlier production models but the current production is as good as most other manufactures. The "truth and real reason' that the GS800M is not imported and sold in Europe is that the Grundig-USA (ETON Corp.) is licensed to manufacture and sell "Grundig" Brand Name Radios in the North American Market (not Europe). + Note: The 'primary' busines of Grundig-USA is "Grundig" Name Brand Radio/Receivers. Grundig AG Germany has the rights to "Grundig" Brand Name Radios in Europe and did not choose to market the GS800M in Europe mainly to pricing considerations ~1000 Euros. -Note: "Grundig" Name Brand Radio/Receivers are not even a major business focus of Grundig Ag Germany. If you are a Broadcast Program Listener and want hours of enjoyable listening without fatigue then the GS800M is a good choice for you. If you are stuck with the "Euro-Centric-Idea" that the only good Grundig Radios were made in Europe. - Then look for a 'used' Grundig Satellit 600 or 650. - - Or many be a Grundig Satellit 500 or 700. - - - Take the 'chance' and pay the price. Grundig AG Germany has the rights to "Grundig" Brand Name Radios in Europe and did not choose to market the GS800M in Europe mainly to pricing considerations ~1000 Euros. Besides, the Grundig Germany sticks in very serious financial troubles in the moment . They even had closed a well known traditional factory in Vienna, Austria. I think they have other problems as to market an expensive margin product for Europe. If you are a Broadcast Program Listener and want hours of enjoyable listening without fatigue then the GS800M is a good choice for you. Well, I'm a very unregular SWL, but if I were I would really consider to obtain the 800 after your hints. If you are stuck with the "Euro-Centric-Idea" that the only good Grundig Radios were made in Europe. - Then look for a 'used' Grundig Satellit 600 or 650. - - Or many be a Grundig Satellit 500 or 700. - - - Take the 'chance' and pay the price. I would gladly buy an used Satellit as I had my first hf-contact on a Satellit 500 of my friend. But very good products are also expensive even on the second hand market.
