The secret word where antennas are concerned is...
Slinky.
I don't know why they work, but they do.

Please elaborate.

Ok guys and Gals, here is one for the more technically minded of you :o)

I'm going to cross-post this to RRS, as the real radio technos
live over there...

If I want to try and improve the reception on my car radio or home based SW
radio (to for example pick up weather broadcasts or news broadcasts in a
remote location), the normal route is to extend the length of the ariel

????
How ever when I have tried this with my Roberts 886 world band all I get is
more very loud interference.

So how do I extend the length of an ariel using a wire to improve

reception
without picking up more interference?

Steve

Well, yeah. But so's a hundrded feet of stretched out wire.
And when you can attach an antenna wire to a Slinky, hang it
out a window, and get BETTER reception than the hundred feet
of wire...

Then you're getting into occult realms.

A slinky is about 30 feet long, and its the extra, multiple antenna lengths
that count..
( & your car is REALLY gonna look funky if you stretch a slinky cross da roof
:)

A toy spiral wire thingy that could walk down stair steps -- seriously.
Makes a makeshift antenna.

Now available commercially -- URL:

JS,

On a recent trip to Toys-R-Us they had some near the check out axiles
for about $3. They were about the size of the smaller Slinky JR's,
but they were not being sold under the Slinky Brand Name. Instead
that were labeled "Metal Spring Toy" (Made in China).

I love to have a few copperclad slinkys, if they exist?!

I saw a 'retro-mercial' for Slinky on 'TV-Land'. It was one of the
original Slinky commercials with the song 'everyone loves a Slinky'. I
recall the first ones were made with a silver metal but I had one that
was copper colored (plated?).

If you really want them get a couple of metal slinkys and take them to
a chrome plating shop. Shouldn't cost too much.

..
Boycott anything made in France and vacation somewhere else.

RHF July 25th 03 12:29 AM

BP,

Never seen a "Copper Clad" Slinky but a Google search for 'brass
slinky' will provide several good URL/Links for "Solid Brass Slinkys"
and Gold Plated Slinkys.

Here are three a sample URL/Links with both Brass and Gold are listed.
