I'm in western Michigan and we have city power here. Power is out in
eastern Michigan, at least around the Detroit area, perhaps more.

Thanks, Frank. I'd been to Jeff's site but I'd never read the NYC blackout
story. Fascinating!

[snip]

I pretty much missed out on first blackout what with not being in the area
and in the third grade and all that, but I was a little surprised that the
broadcasters reacted as well as they did back then. Maybe that shouldn't
have been so surprising, though. Stations had more people then and Conelrad
was still a recent memory. And nothing else serves in a crisis as well as
radio.

So True!
Here in NY, No Power meant Rescue runs to Midtown in the car,
( Wife, Relative, Neighbor)

Ferried some Hospital staff south on the trip down. Lots of everyone helping
each other out.

After sunset, all, stairs, Candles,Flashlights, & Great SWR reception;

RNZI was coming through like a local station. Booming!

Same with Radio Australia this A.M. Very Clear

Used the $9.95 B & H for local stuff & the Sangean 606A & 40 foot antenna for
SWR;
Unbelievable reception!

Last night, the GWB was Totally dark, just light by Cars & trucks going across;
Silhouetted against the darkened Hudson, it looked like something out of
Starwars
All the huge Apt. buildings on the Jersey Shore. were dark. A few patches of
light from Generator powered Hospitals, aside from that darkness.

Looked out at 4:00 A.M; & the street was Totally dark, justl light by
Moonlight;

as of Friday 11:00 A.M. Power is on, but No cable TV so far,

Hooked up some wire to the TV's Coax & pointed it
around, got Channel 7. Possibly from the Mcarthur tower about 5 miles away..

Amazing that the " Internet" is even somewhat working...
If you stayed up all night to make this happen, Much Thanks !!

Dan

People in Times Square were stargazing last night, some of them for the
first time in their lives.

The only thing I noticed here in the Houston-Galveston area, this Friday
evening, is that the cell phone systems seem to be overloaded -- clear past
Midnight.

I thought each cell phone relay site had back up power but apparently
not so, judging from last nights experience in the northeast.

The problem wasn't with a lack of power for cell sites, it was with overuse.
The system is capable of only about 20% of it's customers using it at one
time. When the power dropped, everyone with a cell phone was trying to call,
like trying to put 10 lbs. of feces into a 3 lb. bucket..

My wife & I use small FSR's ( & Extra Batteries) to communicate during
emergencies. We have an evacuation plan;
meeting places / fall backs, etc.

During a real emergency, Cell phones are about as useful as bricks.

Excellent analogy, for more reasons than one.
