300KHz digital signal

I monitor VLF and have discovered a data signal at 300.0 KHz. It seems to
be on continuously. I have searched the FCC databases and searched the web,
but can not find out what this signal is. It is S9+10 in Maryland.

Can anyone tell me what this is or where I can search for info to try to
identify it?

Thanks,

John

Sounds like the USCG ... got one here in Milwaukee 297khz ... sounds like RTTY
(teletype) ... it's 30db over S9 here ... makes a nice reference signal for
antenna work. I forget the official name for this type of LW service.

Are you near any high voltage transmission lines? Power companies use power
line carrier to pass low bandwidth telemetry and relaying signals on
transmission lines. They typically operate from about 300 kHz down.

NAVTEX is only broadcast on one frequency (518) as far as I know. I wonder if
you might be hearing Differential GPS?

Speaking of longwave, I have a loud digital signal on 100 kHz. Does anyone know
what it is? LORAN?

It could be one of the GPS correction signals that transmit in the 300 to
315kHz range.

Navtex is also on 490 KHz in some areas as well.

I believe the Milwaukee DGPS is on 297kHz, check a USCG site for
details.
LORAN C is on 100kHz

That would be the differential GPS signal from the Coast Guard there.

There's a USCG DGPS station at Annapolis, but it's on 301.0 KHz.

All,

Thanks for the replies. I think the mystery is solved. I believe I am
hearing the DGPS station in Annapolis on 301kHz. I hear the same type (but
weaker) signal at 307kHz, which is the DGPS station in Hagerstown, MD.

Thanks all!
