Shortwave Conditions?

Hang in there! Usually when the storms act up I can hear Radio Exterior Espana on 15385 behind the noise. The last two days I haven't heard it AT ALL. That must be one powerful solar storm! |
I could not agree more. The ionosphere is indeed suffering from a
storm condition during the last day or two. You can still do some SWL'ing however it will take a bit more patience and perhaps some help from your equipment & antenna. If you are using a smaller antenna, wait a day or so and it will be back up soon. Ref: Bad SWL conditions.. SpamBlock.. Things have been bad on the shortwave and amateur frequencies for a long time. Nothing is coming in as they did years ago in the 13 year upcycles that are generally present. Even in the periods that things should be good, the signal to noise ratio is terrible. Back in the early 50's I remember when there was a great amount of activity going on on 20meters and those higher shortwave bands...It seemed like the shortwave stations were on 40meters in the middle of the day, interfering with Ham radio chatter. That day has been gone for a long time. It seems that the projected upcycles are not that "up". Seems to be some other Cycle involved here. Your receiver and antenna are probably O.K...its just the overall conditions. The light pollution here would obscure WW3!!! Dang, we were lucky enough here not to rvrn have lost power during the recent NE blackout. It would have been nice to see the Milky Way from my home, if even for one night. g They were stargazing in 'Times Square' during the recent blackout.
