Dawn of the Dead - Hurricane Swen-A
Anybody else getting flooded with e-mails from victims
of the the Swen-A virus? I've gotten around 50 of them since last night and there is still a constant stream. There's mention of it on the McAfee site and a blurb at www.theregister.co.uk |
No, but I got three emails with viral attachments addressed as if they were
actually from Microsoft. Do not open the message - delete it. Microsoft does NOT, I repeat NOT send critical updates or patches of any kind to people via email. I would suggest that users of Outlook Express leave it in Restricted sites zone and have it set not to allow scripts. I would also suggest strongly that people get and use a firewall with high security settings. Any personal information and the PC itself, could be in jeopardy otherwise. FWIW mm |

My mailbox does not even fit as many worm mails, thus it was full when I got up. :( Have now changed my address, but after posting to Usenet with this in my Reply-To I get some again. Not as many as b4, but still very annoying... "I am strictly against death penalty - except for spammers and mail worm writers, and perhaps programmers of crappy mailers." Stephan Let's not neglect torture. I'm sure there's a reason they didn't have these e-mail problems back in the Dark Ages. Frank Dresser |

I can see how Linux would be immune to the code written into this virus, but how would it keep you from being flooded by infected e-mail? I just got an automated e-mail from an ISP saying "WARNING: YOU WERE SENT A VIRUS". It also sent to many other addresses. All the addresses I recognized were also posters to rec.antiques.radio+phono. I suppose one of their readers got infected. Even guys there with Web TV are getting flooded. Frank Dresser |

BUY Antivirus sftware & keep it updated Yes, but I think antivirus software will become less and less useful as more and more computers get high speed connections. This "virus" is a 106 kb ..exe file. 106 kb! And I got 80 of them before AT&T caught up and stopped distributing it. I would have gotten more, but I blocked e-mail on this account for a while. And I don't think users can be expected to be able to update faster than ISPs. So far, I've got about 300 e-mails, but the attachment isn't available, anymore. They seem to be coming from only a few ISPs. I don't think many people are getting fooled by this thing. But there are a few computers out there pumping out plenty of 106 kb attachments to make up the difference. Anyway, a little paranoia is a good thing in this case. Thankfully, there's no shortage of that here on rec.radio.shortwave. Frank Dresser |

I'm not sure what Fred was getting at. Obviously your operating system can't prevent you from getting infected mail, but does allow you to not worry about it - so far, anyway. |

I am getting 40-50 a day, more in overnights (this morning my email was
already maxed out!) |

I've had these things at a rate of 3 or 4 a day for months. Yesterday, I got
about 300. "Larry Ozarow" wrote in message ... Anybody else getting flooded with e-mails from victims of the the Swen-A virus? I've gotten around 50 of them since last night and there is still a constant stream. There's mention of it on the McAfee site and a blurb at www.theregister.co.uk |

No not me, the email program. :-) It doesn't have a clue what to do with an attachment other than putting it in the designated attachment directory, awaiting further inspection by me. I just delete them unless I'm expecting a specific attachment from someone I know.
