Dawn of the Dead - Hurricane Swen-A

Anybody else getting flooded with e-mails from victims
of the the Swen-A virus? I've gotten around 50 of them
since last night and there is still a constant stream.
There's mention of it on the McAfee site and a blurb at
www.theregister.co.uk

Warpcore September 19th 03 02:33 PM

No, but I got three emails with viral attachments addressed as if they were
actually from Microsoft. Do not open the message - delete it. Microsoft does
NOT, I repeat NOT send critical updates or patches of any kind to people via
email. I would suggest that users of Outlook Express leave it in Restricted
sites zone and have it set not to allow scripts. I would also suggest
strongly that people get and use a firewall with high security settings. Any
personal information and the PC itself, could be in jeopardy otherwise. FWIW

My mailbox does not even fit as many worm mails, thus it was full when I
got up. :( Have now changed my address, but after posting to Usenet with
this in my Reply-To I get some again. Not as many as b4, but still very
annoying...

Let's not neglect torture. I'm sure there's a reason they didn't have these
e-mail problems back in the Dark Ages.

I've gotten over 100 copies of a 156k virus claiming to
be the latest security patch since yesterday afternoon.

Nope! I use Linux. I haven't received any of the latest batch anyway.

I love it.

I can see how Linux would be immune to the code written into this virus, but
how would it keep you from being flooded by infected e-mail?

I just got an automated e-mail from an ISP saying "WARNING: YOU WERE SENT A
VIRUS". It also sent to many other addresses. All the addresses I
recognized were also posters to rec.antiques.radio+phono. I suppose one of
their readers got infected. Even guys there with Web TV are getting
flooded.

Yes, but I think antivirus software will become less and less useful as more
and more computers get high speed connections. This "virus" is a 106 kb
..exe file. 106 kb! And I got 80 of them before AT&T caught up and stopped
distributing it. I would have gotten more, but I blocked e-mail on this
account for a while. And I don't think users can be expected to be able to
update faster than ISPs.

So far, I've got about 300 e-mails, but the attachment isn't available,
anymore. They seem to be coming from only a few ISPs. I don't think many
people are getting fooled by this thing. But there are a few computers out
there pumping out plenty of 106 kb attachments to make up the difference.

Anyway, a little paranoia is a good thing in this case. Thankfully, there's
no shortage of that here on rec.radio.shortwave.

It doesn't. I started this thread and I use Linux. I'm not sure
what Fred was getting at. Obviously your operating system can't
prevent you from getting infected mail, but does allow you to
not worry about it - so far, anyway.

- Still, if you set your e-mail to

"Download attachments separatly"

it'll save you some grief..

Ya know, If I hadn't seen this thread, I would have simply deleteted
the messages without even a cursory glance -- as spam. You just made
me curious.

I *love* my ancient outdated email client that doesn't understand HTML
and isn't able to open attachments, automatically or otherwise, simply
displaying their raw ASCII content in the message body. g

I second that motion!

I read e-mail with a 1995 version of Eudora Lite.
I use Agent for usenet only.
I never install any of the Outlook bull****.

The only good thing about M$ dominance is that it provides a huge
number of victims for the virus writers and crackerz. They focus on
the latest useless M$ all-in-one swinging door and leave the rest of
us alone.

I agree. I use old software because the viruses are all aimed
at the newest stuff. Blaster worms and the like may crash
computers all over the world, but they don't touch mine.

I'm another ancient Eudora user. No not me, the email program. :-) It
doesn't have a clue what to do with an attachment other than putting it
in the designated attachment directory, awaiting further inspection by
me. I just delete them unless I'm expecting a specific attachment from
someone I know. I've been on the Net for about 8-years without any virus
protection software and have never had a virus or worm installed on my
system.

Then I go back to the 80's as a BBS sysop

Wow! I had almost forgot, those were the good old days, Commodore 64 and all.

The 64's and 128's served me well until 1994

They were reliable. Think I bailed out in 89 or 90. I had a C128/1084 monitor
and four 1571 drives, thought I was strolling in tall cotton the first time I
connected with a bulletin board.
