Trade: R-75 for Palstar

Hey,

I have a barely used R-75. Want to trade for a Palstar R30

Why?

I just bought one for backpacking miniDXpeditions. I like it, it only weighs 2
lbs without batteries, does not overload on MW even with 700 ft of wire and a
5kw directional local 2 miles away. My only complaint so far is that it is deaf
below 500khz. THe sensitivity is something like 2uv ... horrible ! I hope there
will be a mod for this.

Very nice radio though !

P.S. Stay tuned for the write up on my first backpacking miniDXpedition ...
gotta copy some of the audio off the cassette first.)

Is yours a newer unit, or an older one? Some of the older units had a fixed
270uH inductor as a tuning element in the 1st 455kHz I.F. stage. This is in
parallel with a 470pF chip cap. Sometimes, the tolerances of that fixed
inductor would cause a loss in sensitivity. If this is the case, it can be
replaced with a variable inductor. I did that with mine, and the NF
improved quite a bit, to the point of having an MDS of .1uV down to 200kHz,
degrading to .3uV at 100kHz. Another thing that helps this radio below
500kHz quite a bit is having a good ground. I use a power supply that has a
3 wire cord, and having that ground connection improves the low end signals
by around 3 S-units.

Welcome to the Palstar world, jw. I have been following your Palstar
adventure over on NRC. I am looking fwd to the details. I just got
the MW tuner for my R30. Still too new with it to be able to provide
many details yet. If you ever need the procedure to make the internal
adjustment to get it dead on frequency, I have that one documented.
Good idea on the battery set up you chose.

This sounds great. Are there service manuals available and do you have a Mouser
number or something of the coil used???

I would give Paul a call....................he should have them in stock.
Tell him that I sent you. I could tell you that he doesn't have manuals
available for that radio. If you ever get down to the Chicago area (Mount
Prospect), if you stop in, I can do the mod for you free of charge.
