Thanks Peter Peter, Unless it's machine-sent, CW (Morse) is sufficiently idiosyncratic to allow identification of an operator by his "fist." Needless to say, most software has a hard time matching the decode error rate of human "wetware." Most machine-generated digital modes, however, are an entirely different story. PC soundcards have made available to us cheap A/D convertors with pretty impressive specs, embedded in PCs whose performance puts to shame the specialized DSP hardware of a few years ago. There are many good soundcard software packages available for digital modes, including the following freeware packages which I personally find useful: For HF-Fax (and 137 MHz satellite APT downlinks) - Christian Bock's outstanding WxSat from http://www.hffax.de/WX_Satellite/WXSat/wxsat.html ; For FSK Baudot RTTY (with the best automatic freq. control I've found) Makoto Mori's excellent MMTTY from http://www.qsl.net/mmhamsoft/mmtty/index.html whose RTTY engine is great as a stand-alone, but has become the defacto standard used in several of the multi-mode digital soundcard decoding programs, such as HamScope and WinWarbler, from http://users.mesatop.com/~ghansen/ and http://www.qsl.net/winwarbler/ , respectively. They also do PSK31, using AE4JY's PSKcore DLL from WinPSK, whose best application I find in Dave Wheatly's excellent PSK31 standalone program WinPSKse from http://www,winpskse.com but I (slightly) prefer the independently developed PKS31 decoder program DigiPan ("DIGItal PANoramic receiver") from http://www.digipan.net/ which has also become the foundation for a $50 shareware multimode decoder program that does RTTY, AMTOR, PKS31, etc, called MixW32. There are _many_ more programs designed for soundcard decoding, which you can easily find with a Google search. Another source is Oliver Welp's Amateur Radio Soundblaster Software list at http://www.muenster.de/~welp/sb.htm and yet another for still other such modes (Hellschreiber, MFSK16, MT63) is ZL1BPU's "Fuzzy Modes and Modern Digital Modes" web-site at http://www.qsl.net/zl1bpu/index.html To try them out, the CFH (Canadian Forces, Halifax) weather broadcasts on 6496.4kHz and 10,536kHz send 120/576 fax on the hour, for from 20 to 40 minutes. They then switch to 75Baud/800Hz-shift Baudot RTTY. Deutcher Wetterdienst - Hamburg broadcasts SYNOP weather reports in 50Baud/425Hz-shift Baudot RTTY on 10,100.1kHz and on 7646kHz. (The above are the official listed frequencies, which are the midpoint between the MARK and SPACE - or BLACK and WHITE - tone frequencies. If you have to tune in USB mode, your indicated frequency will, of course be lower by the average of the two equivalent tones - with SPACE being 2125Hz, MARK being lower by the shift amount, WHITE being 2300Hz and BLACK being 1500Hz.) For PSK31, the software is actually your last IF and demodulator, as well as decoder. Just tune in USB to 14070kHz with a 2.8 or 3kHz BW.
