deterioration in list quality

The list is of no value because it's stated mission has been subverted by
the religious wackos, political zealots and potty mouths.

When you clean the content up thru proper moderation you will have my
participation, albeit humble

Well, post something relevant !

Perhaps a log, equipment review, antenna experiment.

Garbage in = garbage out !

Mostly, I ignore it. Filters can help.

Which "you" would be responsible for cleaning up the content? This group
wasn't setup to be moderated. Another group such as
rec.radio.shortwave.moderated would have to be established. As long as
you're reading rec.radio.shortwave, you'll have to be your own moderator.
Anyway, why would anybody take on an unpaid, thankless, full-time job?

Goodbye

Yahoo groups might be suitable.

Absolutely, positively right. One of the most important things to
remember about any troller is that they get there jollies from
*responses*, and they CARE LESS what the response is. You can respond
to an obvious troll with anything from "Right on, Man! to "You are out
of your freakin' mind!" or anything in between, and it MAKES NO
DIFFERENCE TO THE TROLLER - YOU *BIT*, AND THEY GOT WHAT THEY WANTED.

It is rare, but I have seen it happen that everyone on a usenet group
ignores an obvious troll. They disappear amazingly fast. A clown will
not perform for an empty house.

And your point of this valuable piece of shortwave contribution is?

"Yodar"?

Bye.

Stinger October 17th 03 11:56 PM

It's really simple to do your own moderation on Usenet.

If you're using Outlook Express, once you're reading an annoying message do
the following:

First, click the "Message" tab just under the top bar (the one that says
"rec.radio.shortwave - Outlook Express") and you'll get a list of actions.

If you just want to get a particular irritating poster out of the way, you
can "PLONK" him by selecting "block sender." It will block messages from
being downloaded that are sent by that poster. It will also give you the
opportunity to delete all the messages you've already downloaded from that
poster.

Or...

You can also pick "ignore conversation" which will do exactly that -- all
posts with the topic you're ignoring will not show up on your computer at
all.

Enjoy!

If everyone would simply stop feeding the trolls, they would go away.
Remember, trolls abhor an attention vacuum. It's no fun being ignored.

FYI: it's not a mailing list - it's usenet. And, like the vast majority
of usenet, it's unmoderated. If you are not familiar with the
distinction, you may want to Google a bit on usenet, newsgroups and
trolls for more information.

This group was set up for the hobby of listening to shortwave radio. It was
supposed to be a technical group.

"The religious wackos, political zealots and potty mouths" are here is
because they listen to the wackos that broadcast on shortwave, and mistake
this group as a forum for their ramblings. The fact is that they are the
ones misusing this group.

First, nobody has to read a post they don't want to.

Second, it's very easy to set up most newsreaders to filter most of it out
without even seeing it.

If there is a problem, it's when people who should know better try to "set
them straight" and get a big mess stirred up.

You leaving here won't bother anybody - but wouldn't it be better to become
a positive contributor, rather than running off after leaving an indignant
"goodbye" post?

Hey Stinger,
I've just downloaded the 'newer' Outlook and I have noticed that when I hit
'reply'.....it 'used too' have the persons message to copy and paste. Now,
for whatever reason, it's blank, except for my sig. I've just been
copying and pasting the original and then going to my 'blank' after I hit
reply and paste in the message I'm replying to.

What gives. {?} Apparently there is something I haven't got checked or
maybe vice versa. Any help for a fellow shortwave brother. ;-)

TIA
