Kaiwa KA1101 now available (Degen DE1101)

The much talked about (Dual Conversion) Kaiwa KA1101 is now available
from

KaitoUSA for $74.95+$8.20shipping
http://www.kaitousa.com/KA1101.htm
or from
Radios4you at $69.95+ $8.05
http://www.radios4you.com/kaito-ka1101.html

Plus, if you read the Radiointel website to get the details,
you can get a free 'clothesline' antenna when you purchase the
radio at Radios4you.
http://www.radiointel.com

Universal Radio says that they will have it for $69.95 on October 28
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...able/1101.html

The KA1102 (1 kHz steps, SSB, more memories) is due in the end of
November ($99.95 from Kaito USA)
http://www.kaitousa.com/KA1102.htm

I have nothing to do with Degen/Kaito/Radios4you/Universal

I ordered one from Katio a few days ago. Should be here by Monday. From
what I've read and heard, it's on par with the YB-400, but with no SSB. I
really liked the idea of the rechargeable batteries and the light activated
backlight display. I have a portable SW radio at work that I use, the
SB-939 "singbox", but it's useless as anything other then a medium wave
radio for AM. I can't even hear the big boys like the BBC with that radio.
It's just as unstable as you would expect a $ 20.00 radio to be. I use it to
listen to AM broadcast news all day. For that, it's perfectly good, but, I
have to change the batteries every few weeks. I'm hoping I can get some
real shortwave use out of the KA1101 at work. At the very least, I won't
have to spend on battery replacement.

When the KA1102 is available, I plan on buying one to use as a travel radio.
That thing seems to be packed with features and it has SSB. I'm REALLY
curious to see how it stacks up against the YB-400 and the Sony 7600gr.
I've had both radios, so I'll be able to tell if the KA1102 is the ultimate
bang for the buck of the ultimate bust.

Should be real interesting.

Hi Michael,
I'm guessing you plan to test this radio extensively
and report to the group on it's performance...
but just to be sure, I'd like to request that you let
us know what you think of it. Some of the students
I teach are interested in SWL but don't have the
funds to get a quality portable like the YB400.
Thanks for taking time to consider my request.

Michael October 18th 03 12:51 AM

It will be my pleasure to give a full review of the radio after I have had a
few days to use it. It was my intention to do so in a new string. I'm not
a radio engineer, but I have more then enough time in with other portables
to be able to give a practical account of it's performance. I can't tell
you how interested I am to see how this radio performs. I've read/heard
that it's going to be the best value for dollar radio since the R-75 :-)

Stay tuned, I'll have it soon !!!!!!!!!!!

Also...

When the KA1102 is available, I plan to test out it's SSB capabilities. I'm
going to use it's line out jack and give a go at some utility decoding;
RTTY, Fax. Should be interesting to see if it's stable enough and if the
fine tuning is practical.

I'll have to wait for November for that, though.

P.A. October 18th 03 02:15 AM

There is a very nice review of the KA1102 (Degen DE1102) by Ulis
Fleming on RadioIntel.com:
http://www.radiointel.com/review-degende1102.htm

In short, performance appears to be excellent, and the radio has a
host of other nice features (light blue illuminated display and
keypad, 190 memories, FM bass boost, ...). However the user interface
and overall usability appear to leave much to be desired (confusing
page system; example: to activate SSB mode, the radio must be in page
9; pressing the SSB button if you are not on page 9 gives an error!).

Me too! Review would be greatly appreciated. Now, where does one get of
these in ol' Europe...? Guess I'll have to drop an e-mail to the usual
suspects...
Considering setting up a Yahoo! Group, too. I'll have a look into how
that works...

Here you go, review on KA1102.
As far as we know, it's the only one out there.

It is the 2nd receiver listed on our review page
