Kenwood R-5000 $230
 

A Kenwood R-5000 just went for $230 on Ebay. The Seller had four
positive and one negative feedbacks. His description was minimal, to
the effect that the radio came out of government service and was in
working order. His picture showed what appeared to be a clean unit,
but not powered up, so no apparent sign of life. What do you think,
bargain of the year or too good to be true?

For some reason, it's not showing up in the "Completed Items." Could be
something stupid, like misspelling "Kenwood" (which might also explain the
lack of bids).

I would have sent the seller some questions before bidding.

And the reason for the one negative feedback would be interesting.

80% positive feedback isn't confidence inspiring. The neg is for a $15 purchase.
None of his feedback is for transactions where he was the seller.

Prior use as a coast guard radio implies perhaps it was on 24/7 for years.

The model wasn't listed in the title- people who searched for R-5000 wouldn't find it.

It may be a great deal - but odds are people would feel it was a riskier transaction than buying a radio from an established radio seller with nearly perfect feedback.

Some of these various radios that were, as you said in 'government
service' have been Mod'ed and Tuned for superior performance.

IIRC: A business called the Electronic Equipment Bank "EEB" use to do
some of this work.

Agree that the seller's profile is not what you'd like to see (only 5
previous transactions, all as buyer, one non-payment, and can't spell
"reciver"). Still, my gut feeling is that the buyer probably got a
good deal.

The seller has posted positive feedback on this transaction; let's
wait and see what the buyer has to say.

Yes, and "receiver" was spelled "reciver." So anyone searching for
"Kenwood receiver" or "R-5000" would never have found it. I suspect
that was the main reason for the low winning bid.
