3) overall conclusion to back up these bold statements

Don't let me down lad ! Don't be like the greatr ocean sunfish that is
large and imposing but has no bite and is a but a great bluff !

If I wanted to take something to the park, I would put that $225.00 into

a

good portable. At that price point, a portable that will far outperform

the

394 can be had.

I am building a portable DX-394. if you are interested, there is still
time to customize it. the price is $225 plus shipping. it will work
off INTERNAL AA batteries or a wall wart. now you can take it to the
park !!

email me at . prepayment is required to weed
out game players.

MM,

Its not the Steak . . .
- - - It's the Sizzle !

WHY NOT Make this a . . .
+ Signature "Mods by Mike Maghakian"
+ + With a Mod Plate ID Plate on the back of the radio.
+ + + A Letter of Certification as to the MODS incorporated into the radio.

Create a 'unique' "Collectors Item" in your own name :o)

I should clarify that AA batteries are not the only mod, there will be
an assortment of performance improvements.

like the eddie Bauer edition of some Ford vehicles !

I have one mod left to do, the switchable filter option. to switch
between a dual LF-D6 wide and the stock narrow filters.

the results are quite excellent. I hae retrofitted the prototype with
the improvements in the commercial version and I spry painted mine to
a metallic black finish, very cool !

MR. CW,

I haven't seen anything backing up your claims on the DX-394, this makes
the captain think you are a blowhard, blasting hot air out like the
massive whales of the sea. Don't let me think you were full of it when
you said you knew about the DX-394.

Where the captain is from, the show of the sword has to be backed by a
duel if the bluff was called.

CW,, show the captain your sword !!!

Given the tone of your posts, and the amount of work required to answer your questions, he's probably ignoring you.

But here's a link to a web site with information about the DX-394. They rate radios for "value" - Their rating system gives radios 1-5 stars. The DX-394 got 1 star.

http://www.dxing.com/rx/dx302.htm

Here is a page with an explanation of their value rating system:

http://www.dxing.com/rx.htm

You'll note one star is considered "Poor".

That's an unusually low rating with no negative comments or explanation to
support it. I would consider the ARRL Lab review in QST and the Radio
Netherlands review to be more comprehensive and professional.

QST Oct/97 - no rating system - "touts lots of features, especially
considering its price class"; "ultra-simple to use"; "Among the best
features of the DX-394 is its memory system"; "able to locate and copy some
of the amateur SSB stations that had shoehorned their way among the BC
behemoths"; "a decent job of receiving AM signals".

4 stars of 5 - http://www.rnw.nl/realradio/dx394.html

The following are averages of ratings submitted by a number of people:

5 stars of 5
http://www.consumerdemocracy.com/sho...ry= Ham+Radio

4.2/5 - http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/2108

3.5/5 - http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/1188
In this lowest average, there is one reviewer who gives it a 0! The majority
give it 4 of 5, the same as Radio Netherlands. That I think is a realistic
(not 'Realistic') value rating for the DX-394.

To each his own. What's a POS?

BTW, reviews of DX-300:

3/5 - eHam.net http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/3454

"used audio filtering for its Wide/Narrow bandwidth"; "prone to overload";
"quite 'twitchy' to tune properly" -
http://www.anarc.org/naswa/issues/0396/equp0396.html

1/5 - http://www.dxing.com/rx/dx200.htm the same source that gave 1/5 for
the DX-394!

So in the opinion of others, the DX-300 is value-rated inferior to or no
better than the DX-394, without mods. With suitable mods, the DX-394 can be
greatly improved. There is no other radio receiver in the market that I'm
aware of that has as large and comprehensive base of documented, useful
modifications. It has the 3rd largest receiver-specific user group in
Yahoo!Groups.
