That would be a tough call for a couple of reasons.

The first is that I don't know how well your Sony does with the loop. The
second is even harder because we're comparing apples to oranges. Yes, the
CC Radio AM is better than the Sony (at least a 7600 GR, which I've used),
but as you mention -- you get SW. With the CC Radio, you get VHF-TV and WX,
as well as truly excellent FM.

If you ask me, TV sound is basically useless. Good portable TV's are cheap
anyway. The Weather band is handy, but I'd rather have shortwave -- it's
easier to get weather info on TV or internet.

I can tell you that if C. Crane ever does decide to add a decent shortwave
receiver as a premium model of their desktop CC Radio, I'll be one of the
first in line to buy it. I have been extremely impressed with the quality
and workmanship I've seen on both the Justice antenna and the CC Radio Plus.

I realize that I haven't really answered your question, but it's such a
subjective and personal preference, it isn't practical for me to try. My
best advice would be to try it out for yourself, and if you're not
impressed, take C. Crane up on their 30-day return policy.

I also purchased the $50 Justice Antenna and have had great success
with it. Really pulling in AM stations and increasing listenability
(word??). Very happy on my purchase. And always fun to have a new
knob to turn. I'd recommend it highly although at $100 and shipping
it may be a touch expensive.

That's my concern--the ol' cost/benefit issue. I have no doubt it's a
nice antenna, but how much better is it than my 19.95 Rat Shack loop,
which I'm pretty pleased with? I've had the same c/b issue with the
CC Radio, which is promoted as the last word in AM radios, but is
apparently helped more than a little by adding the $50-100 Justice
antenna. Will this set up be noticeably better than the AM section of
my 7600G with Rat Shack loop (total $180, including SW & FM)?
Perhaps, but for some (like me) relative performance for the dollar is
an issue as well.

All:

- This device uses a 9 volt battery;
I assume it has an amp in it;
- else why the need for 9 volts
??
- How's it work without the battery ??

External A/C Adapter to 9VDC.

Unplugged (or turned off) it has no effect. It needs power.

Hmm....

Need a REAL portable;

will try to build something workable;
Ferrite loop or real small foldable loop

( Already got the parts from Ocean Elextronics
( VAriable Condensers & ferrites
http://www.oselectronics.com/ose_p96.htm

http://www.oselectronics.com/ose_p88.htm
& Elna electonics

ferrite RODS

http://www.elnamagnetics.com/

- So I'll poke around & see what I can come up with..
