Yaesu FRG-100B

Hello,

I own an Icom r75 and am looking to get another receiver to play
around with. How does the FRG-100 stack up to the r75. What is its
strengths and weakness.

Thank

Believe it or not, copy and paste the entire link to your address bar, it
goes to the shortwave newsgroup at Google (the same as this group, but a
record of a previous thread).

Basically, myself and several other posters in the above thread vouched
for the fine quality and sensitivity of the Yaesu FRG-100B.

I have both the Yaesu and the Icom. Some others on this group insist that
synchronous detection is an absolute necessity, but of the Icom R-75,
Radio Netherlands had this to say concerning the synchronous detection:

http://www.rnw.nl/realradio/icr75b.html

"Spot the Difference with the Sync

What is the singular failing of this receiver? (the Icom R-75) In our
opinion, there is virtually no difference between synchronous AM and AM
reception. The synchronous mode includes both sidebands; there is no
option to choose the lower or upper sideband. The Lowe HF-150 synchronous
modes and performance are far superior. We urge that ICOM correct the
synchronous performance in future models and make available a retrofit
ROM available to current customers.

Fortunately all is not lost here. As the receiver's SSB reception is
quite good, in difficult or crowded band conditions, we simply tune in
the appropriate sideband of the desired signal and, if necessary, adjust
the PBT controls."

My point is that the Yaesu FRG-100B doesn't have Synchronous Detection,
but the SSB is excellent on the Yaesu, so as the paragraph just above
describes for the Icom is also true of the Yaesu.

I don't believe that you could go wrong with the Yaesu. Be patient with
it at first (I had trouble with the Icom when I first received it, since
I had grown accustomed to the Yaesu). The performance of the Yaesu is
excellent.

Another radio to consider is the Palstar R-30.
