Step Up

I currently have a DX-398 which has been a great deal of fun. I am looking
to moving up to the Grundig Satellit 800. It seems to be running about
$400.00 on Ebay. I would like opinions on this radio, is there something
better in this price range? I currently only listen to the AM/SW bands. I
have been reading as much as I can including the various reviews on the web.

Thanks!

The '800' is a decent receiver, although quite large. Quality control is
much better now compared to early models, so you're likely to get a good
one. However I suggest you get a factory refurbished '800'. This will
help to ensure that any problems have been fixed. They typically sell
for about $400. The refurbishing is done by Drake who designed the
circuits used in the '800', so they know what they're doing. Here's a
website with refurbished 800's. Go to the bottom of page.

The Grundig 800 is an excellent radio for the money. However there are two
things people I know have found with them:

1- The quality control is a bit of an on again off again thing. If it sounds
like it is not a great radio return it and have a service tech tweak it up. this
worked very well for a DX'er here in town.

2- The face plate on the radio is not great. After a year or two of intensive
use some of the numbers and letter were wearing off or chipping. It's not a huge
thing but for the money a protective coating on the face plate would be worth
it.

Otherwise it seems like a great radio for the money and you will have to spend a
lot more to go up a notch on the new radio market.

If you're buying a refurbished model, which has already been opened up to
fix/improve/what have you, you may feel comfortable buying a tiny bottle of
clear enamel and lightly *brushing* it over the words and numbers to seal them.
I do not know if the face of the Sat800 is glossy or satiny or flat in 'sheen',
so get a clear coat which will match the factory finish. Do NOT use clear nail
polish, as it is only gloss in finish and if it doesn't eat into the faceplate,
will still crack off easily after being rubbed or pushed for a short time.
Plus, a small bottle of basic clear enamel will come in different finishes to
match the radio, and when purchased from a hobby shop will likely cost you less
than anything you can find at a nail boutique or even the cosmetics dept. at
your local department store. I've used this method to seal decals for crystal
sets, restored vintage sets, and other projects, and have yet to have anything
go wrong. If you use a light enough coat, no one can tell, even you.

I was considering an 800 but bought an Icom R-75 instead. At the
current price of $450(US) with the DSP module at HRO it's a better
value.

Agreed. That's exactly what I did about six weeks ago. Considered
a used/good condition Yaesu, but decided, exactly as you did, that the
Icom was the best all-around value for the price. I am very happy with
it, too.

I have a sat800, Drake reconditioned, and like it a lot. If you
want a radio to listen to programs and bandscan its real nice. If you
are into digging rare DX out of the noise floor save up a while longer
and get something with more filtering options.
