Have old tubes, need INFO!

Hello all,

This is my first post, so please be kind.

My Grandpa was an avid Ham and Shortwave Radio enthusiast. After he passed, I found a box full of old tubes in his garage. I would like to gain some knowledge about the applications of the various tubes, and ultimately find out if they would have any value to a collecter. Below is a complete list, along with what cross reference numbers I have been able to locate, so far. Any help with THAT is also much appreciated!

Most of the numbers I recognize are radio tubes from the 40s or so.
Others on your list may also be familiar, but the numbers may be
unreadable. A number like 5-30 might be a date code. Something like
the 30th week of a "5" year such as 1945 or 1955.

As far as value, you can check the tube price list at:

http://tubesandmore.com/

Most tube vendors sell new tubes at a lower price. Used tubes go for
even less. Lots such as this are frequently sold on E-bay. This is a
better than average lot. Most of the ebay lots have a bunch of series
string TV tubes, which don't have much real value now.

If you're curious about the characteristics of the tubes:

If you want to know alot about how tubes work:

Get some old tube manuals -- such as the RCA and Sylvania pubs --- available on e-bay or Ham Swap Meets

Your library may have them.

Also see URL:

Has some links to on-line lookups

I would like to gain some knowledge about the applications
of the various tubes

for a first step visit http://frank.pocnet.net/ and
http://people.freenet.de/radiolabor/, both are very good sources for
tube data and socket schematics. Access to some tube testing equipment
(operator included, hi) would be fine too, check if the tubes are
still running within their specs. Hams often have got tube testing
equipment. All kind of tubes - regardless to their d.o.p. - are
interesting either for hams or collectors. For instance check ebay
from time to time for corresponding sellings to gather the value. The
types you've listed are mostly post WWII as far as I've seen, so don't
expect too much profit when selling them.

The more difficult part is the applications which should be easy to
find with a bit googling though. Also check this:
http://members.lycos.nl/aren/id33.htm there are some tube projects. It
should be no problem to find some literature on the theory of tube
application. Public library?

If I were you, I would keep the tubes. You never know! ;-)

Good luck!

Vintage Vacuum Tubes:

Hi Allan:

I remember using all but a couple or so. They were very common and found
service in radio and TV. There are a handful of types that go back to the
40's. I'll stick my neck out and say that the type 41 is the oldest of the
bunch. I don't see any tube types that I recognize as collectable and I
don't think there is one that can't be bought at a tube dealer at modest
cost. For the most part, the assortment of tubes that you have were the
types that most of us would have in a well stocked parts drawer for
replacements.

However... if you had a case of brand new 12AX7's you would be in BIG BUCKS
with some variants!!!
See http://www.audiotubes.com/12ax7.htm#12ax7 list

As far as asking for applications... like another poster suggested, get an
old RCA receiving tube manual. The old ARRL Handbooks had a nice reference
on receiving and transmitting tubes in the back---probably a Handbook from
the 1960's would do fine for you. A web search might help on finding the
particulars of some of those types too.

Tubes are very easy to come by now. I would take them to a hamfest and try to sell them. But don't expect to get big bucks for them.

You bet some of those tubes can be useful! The 5U4 rectifiers, the 6L6 pentodes and the 6SN7 dual-triodes are useful for hifi, among other things. The others, I don't know. Problem in digging through boxes of tubes is when I start seeing, say, RCAs in Sylvania boxes, or box numbering scratched over and relabelled--like someone reboxed questionable/used tubes. If I encountered you at a swap meet, and neither of us could be sure if the tubes were new or used, I might offer $1-2/ea for all of the above. You have (4) 6L6 tubes, and that's good because most buyers will want a quad, preferably all same brand/age.

An old (late 40's or 50's) tube manual would ID all these for you.
