Managed to hook up a HF radio to a satellite receiver and picked up
any transatlantic telephone calls, would love any info on this

Or is everything digital now?

I cant find any information on this topic so I expect it cant be done :-(

I think there's still some narrow band FM analogue INMARSAT A stuff about
around 1.6GHz.

I don't know an awful lot about the innards of a satellite receiver, but I
would imagine you might be able to grab a snifter of the IF and pop it into
a receiver with a suitable demodulator like this...

Try http://www.drdish.com which has some detail on this stuff. (It is not
legal to listen to signals outside the broadcast or amateur bands in the UK
unless you are licensed so to do).

For amateur satellites, http://www.amsat.org and http://www.uk.amsat.org
