I have been thinking about purchasing one of these radios. Presently I am
using an Icom R8500. Does anyone have a comparison? Also is the UHF/VHF
board worth it. Last, what other options should I look for?

I have a 545 with VHF/UHF board but never used an 8500.

The 545 almost certainly beats the 8500 on LW/MW/HF, but I doubt it beats the
8500 on VHF/UHF.
