Eton Corp, which builds and sells radios in North America under the brand name of Grundig, is to launch a new multi-purpose satellite radio - the Eton EM1 XM. As well as AM/FM and XM Satellite Radio, it can also receive shortwave broadcasts, making it a true world band receiver. The radio has been developed in collaboration with RL Drake Company. According to Eton's site, the radio boasts 'continuous shortwave reception' AND is digital-ready. Much like a cable-ready TV, you can pick up whatever an antenna can pick up, but if you want the pay channels, you have to subscribe separately. It's NOT a satellite-only radio. I have no idea how well it will perform, but since it has 3 filter choices, sync., a BFO and PBT, I'd say it MUST receive more than satellite signals, as you don't need any of those features with digital, subscription programming. It would be a little silly, yes, to discuss what the DAB or XM services would be, since one can look up various DAB packages and see what their programming offers. But in general I'd say that "any discussion of 'what it can receive'" is NOT 'moronic beyond discussion'. Hobbyists are curious if nothing else, and enjoy discussing specs and features, and arguing about them forever. And please don't steal my donuts. Linus |

I like you would like to have a standard AM/FM/SW Radio with a DRM Reception feature. The XM Satellite Radio feature is something that does not interest me. If it were only a DAB/XM model, there would be no reason to include the OTHER features that same page mentions, like PBT, synch. detection, three BW filters, BFO, etc. Maybe someone can help me with this, but I don't know how ANY of those features would be needed in a DAB-only radio. But yes, before having a full-scale, REAL press release of specs and features, it's hard to say for sure what the radio will be able to do. Regardless, I think's it's pretty safe to assume it's a general coverage HF rig that is READY to do digital, provided the user subscribes to a service. Should be fun! Linus |

What this REMINDS me of is the old RCA Jack on the back of some 1950's Radios that was labeled as "Ready for Television". All it turn out to be was an external Audio input to take the TV Audio and run it through the Larger Radio to get that Big Old Radio Sound. I still can't believe the geniuses at Eton didn't opt to put two speakers on
a large portable radio that receives subscription digital stereo radio. Therefore, the Satellit 800 pretty much used the old Satellit 600/650 case and ergonomics with the Drake SW8 circuitry. The Eton E1 XM pretty much uses the case already designed for the Satellit 900. Cutting costs like that makes a HUGH difference in the price they can sell it for. To add another speaker means a totally different case, not to mention other added costs, and a more powerful amplifier. That would put the radio in another price class. Yes, there ARE geniuses at Eton Corporation. They have already proven that. |

Why Mono-Phonic Sound? -&- Why Not Dual Bi-Aural Sound? Grundig AG (Germany) use to make a few of there "RTV" AM/FM/LW/SW Home Stereo Radios with one built-in speaker and a detachable second speaker. (True Stereo Sound with Separation.) The "Grundig Satellit 800" and now the 'eton e1 xm' radio both lend themselves to having a simple jack on the back for an 'optional' Detached Satellite Speaker for Stereo Listening and true separation of the two audio channels. Most of the 'eton e1 xm' radio owners would simply like using their radios as they are in "Mono-Phonic" only. With headphones or a pair of external speakers for FM or XM Stereo Radio Listening. But, those who wanted the look and sound of a Dual Bi-Aural Sound System and the LOOK of a Radio witha Matching Speaker (Tivoli Model 2). Tey then could BUY the 'optional' Detached Satellite Speaker and Enjoy True Stereo Sound by having both speakers. Plus, Eton Corp. would have a Follow-On (Optional) Product to sell with their radios. {An Additional Product and Profit Center for their Top-of-the-Line radios.
