Baluns & Long Wires

Hi.
Further to my last post............
This weekend i messed about with my long wire
receiving ( only ) antenna.
( Length 20Mtrs, coax fed , earthed 10 mtrs from house).
Yesterday i built a 9:1 balun / transformer .Placed it at my earth rod out
side.
I am not even sure if this is the right one for a long wire?
Anyway.. reception on 20 mtrs now has much less noise now.
The signal to noise ratio has vastly improved.
Reception on other bands remains about the same as before i added
the balun.
(I used my Wellbrook loop antenna to compare signals.)
My question now is...
How do improve reception/noise on other bands ?
Do i need a different balun or change the length of my wire ?
What ever i have done seems to of peaked on 20mts ( 14Mhz).
It would be great to get rid of the noise on 80mtrs for example.
Any ideas or diagrams appreciated.
Interesting stuff this !
Regards
Jeff

JEFF-UK,

QUESTION - Prior to 'making' your Changes did you do any Reception
Testing and Record your Results ?

FWIW - Our Memories are "Poor-Recorders-of-the-Facts: When it
comes to all the 'factors' that make-up the Ojective Evidence
and Subjective Judgements like a Radio Broadcaster's Signal
Strength and the Background Noise Level {Signal-to-Noise Ratio}
of a Shortwave Band.
* Now multiply this by five to ten Broadcasters per SW Band.
* Then multiply this by five to ten SW Bands.
You now have 50 to 200 Observations to Memorize or Record.

I 'favor' the "Write-It-Down" Method.

No. I just know 20 mtrs is very noisy here.
Now its much better on a signal to noise ratio.
Every thing appears to be the same signal strengh on know frequencies.
Cheers

JEFF-UK,

WHAT TO DO: Select from three to five strong International
Broadcast Stations on Each Band: 120M, 90M, 75M, 60M, 49M,
41M, 31M, 25M, 22M, 19M, 16M, 13M, and 11M.

* Record your S-Meter readings for these Stations and
Time of Day/Night.

* De-Tune by 5-15 kHz to a 'dead-spot' on the band and
also record your Background Noise Level for the Band near
each of these Stations.
