The answers to these questions could easily fill a small book.

If you want to listen to ham radio operators and some military traffic, then
yes. Otherwise, no.

etc.

I forgot about those; I assume one needs some sort of decoder attached to
the receiver to make sense out of these transmissions. I haven't had much
interest in these transmissions, so I haven't investigated it much. Can't
hear fishing boats from my area either (the middle of the Great Plains). I
occasionally listen for 10 meter beacons on my ATS-803A.

If I can hear the fishing boats here in Michigan, you should be able to hear
the fishing boats in the middle of the Great Plains.

You sure can hear fishing boats where you are, if the bands are open,
even with a simple radio like a 803a. Sometimes signal strength is
pretty high, and they boom in. They use (mostly) "clipped" ham rigs and
can be heard worldwide. I know a guy who used to listen to them in
germany, so you can get them too.

Actually, I have no interest in broadcasts, except the loon preachers,
etc.

Exactly. I listen to them in Toledo without problems.

The answer is: Land Yachts

I have one parked in the carport, just waiting for warm weather.

Interesting. Actually, I am not that far from Lake Superior (about 150 miles
southwest of there, in Minnesota) but I'm not sure if the iron ore boats on
the Big Lake are using HF or what. I can check that out further. Thanks.

Go to
www.wun.com, look up the maritime freqs. The fishing boata are
usually found above or below the "Official" freqs, since they just run
wherever they want to. It's entirely a hit or miss thing. Listen for the
New England accents. And the swearing/threats, etc.
