I'm tired of crummy reception !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello,

I am so tired of starting to listen to a program only to have it turn to static
before the program is over. The other night I was listening to Allan Weiners
program at 7415 about shortwave which is one hour long. halfway through it was
nothing but mush. I was so upset. It was a great program. I am in Philly.

I have a Grundig Satellit 700, not a crummy radio, what can I do short of
buying an antenna to help myself out.

I will do any amount of work to build rather than buy, within reason.

There is probably not a lot you can do Neil. It's simply propagation, and you wind
up being in the 'skip zone'. The signal is flying right over you.

Propagation should be better for you as we head into spring and summer. But, you
can expect the same as now in the fall and winter.

Neil,

Why do you rule out the antenna?

That's easily the best solution to your reception problem.

yeah, Alan Wiener Worldwide is an excellent show..
- So build a Gigunda 200 foot external antenna
- That may help reception.

Here we go again.

On 7415 at 0000 listening to a nice VOA 50's music program. Great stuff. Now
it is 0100 nothing but static.

I am new to shortwave and perhaps this goes with the territory, if so why do we
love shortwave so much???????

I'll do a search for Gigunda antennas, wish me luck.

I hear Gigunda has a pretty good line of antennas. Never owned one myself, but I've
heard that others swear by em (or was it at em?), at any rate good luck finding
one. The Gigunda Companys output is mighty low, and there is a waiting list.

LOL We love fickle stuff. Else we'd be DX-ing FM stations, instead. (Yet,
those, too, can get iffy with weather changes.)

Hmmm....this begs a question that has bubbling in my head for a couple
of months. I have not been able to hear WBCQ on 7415 very well for a
few months now, and suspect their power may be reduced from what it
once was.

I realize propagation is a factor for reception but conditons just
aren't that bad. I am hearing ham stations from Maine on a Ten-Tec
direct conversion $30 radio kit on 40 meters with an 8 foot piece of
wire for an antenna laying on my floor, and at the same time hearing
WBCQ poorly with a Kenwood R-5000 connected to a tuned 80 meter
inverted vee.

Point being that I think propagation is not the only issue. I think
WBCQ may be on low power perhaps due to equipment problems at this
time.

My 2 cents...73 de WA2AFD

Sure! But I had to buy the components. From the nature of the question, it
sounded like he wanted to "McGuyver" a solution without a trip to Rat Shack.

Seems to me, if you're going to go to the trouble to buy components to build
an antenna, then it doesn't make sense to rule out actually buying an
antenna (if that would be the best solution for what he's trying to listen
to).

I agree with where you're going on this, CW, but thought the parameters of
the question were rather odd, that's all.

Very probably the best solution would be to build a good long-wire.

DJ asked about the Allan Weiner program on WBCQ. WBCQ's website lists the
schedule as;

Allan Wiener Worldwide on

7.415mhz Friday 0100 - 0200 UTC
9.330mhz Saturday 2200 - 2300 UTC
17.495mhz Saturday 1700 - 1800 UTC

Hope you enjoy.

Neil

PS I now see that I lose 7.415 at around 0130 to around 0200 UTC in
Philadelphia.

CW February 8th 04 08:54 PM

He did state a willingness to build. He just did not want to buy a
commercial setup. It was just the way he worded it. Building is a good way
to go as you can easily build something with the performance of a
commercially made antenna. There is, of course, nothing wrong with buying an
antenna if that suits your needs. There are lots of good ones out there and
many people just want to listen to their radio rather than mess with it.

When I started this post I was trying to find out if my problems could be fixed
without spending 100 bucks for a commercial shortwave antenna. I know I can
but I have so much more to learn. I am slowly joining a local ARRL club and
will be learninng more from them. I do plan on getting my ham license,
hopefully at the SWLfest in March. Thanks for all of your help. I love the
Usenet.

Thanks all,

Get some wire & throw it up in a tree. Attach one end to your radio.
Problem solved.
