Q: target

Hi all

I have a question about Sony's Wave Handbook. What does target like Europe,
Middle East, Asia-Oceania, Africa or America mean? Is it possible to catch a
signal targeted Europe in California?

Thank you.

It merely means that that is the intended target area of the broadcast.
Hypothetical example: A broadcast in Hungarian from Radio Australia targeted to
Europe could conceivably be received by you depending upon the time of day,
frequency used and your location in respect to the target area.

That's the short answer!

That's what the shortwave hobby, and shortwave listening is all about.

Most of my "domestic" shortwave listening is possible because the 50-100kW
signals go around the Earth and back to me.

"Targeting" implies several things. For example, if a broadcaster is
targeting a particular transmission to Africa, it will:

- Use an antenna that beams it's signal toward Africa.

- Choose a time and frequency that provides good propagation to Africa.

- Choose a language that will be widely understood in Africa.

- Choose a time of day when people in that area will be likely to be
listening.

- Choose topics of interest to people in that area.

That being said, it's certainly possible for people outside the target zone
to hear the broadcast.

If anyone hasn't seen them, go to:

http://www.wwrb.org/

And check out WWRB's coverage maps. The number in degrees refers to the compass
direction of the antenna's beam direction from the station.

I wish all stations had this kind of thing at thier web sites. Of course, a
world globe at home would suffice.

I noticed that WWRB's new home page is made by the same daffy programmer that
changed the pages of two other favorite sites of mine.

He must have a projected big screen and is using a 1024x768 format. All I get
is a slit of a window in which to scroll. I already complained to the
webmasters of the other sites.

If I've understood correctly (I'm pretty new at this thing too), it
just means that the signal is intended for audiences in the specified
region. It may also mean that the broadcast is sent from the transmitter
to the general direction of the specified area.

But it's not so simple.

Before Christmas I could hear AWR broadcasting from Julich, Germany;
the broadcast was aimed at Western Africa, but it was easy to receive
in Finland - in almost exactly the opposite direction.

Yesterday morning I tried to hear VOA broadcasting from England to Europe,
but apparently Finland (in the NE corner of Europe) was not in the path
of that transmission - I had much better luck with the VOA transmissions
aimed at - again - Africa.

Harri
