I'm just down the road from Ottawa and although there is some QSB on the
BBC I can't really hear anyone else on the frequency - if I strain hard
I can sometimes imagine a very faint signal in the background but would
not notice it if I wasn't listening very carefully for it.

Dave,

I think Sanjaya's suggestion that weak selectivity might have been valid.
CBC Radio 1 was broadcasting on 5960 signed off at 0:59 (8:00 Eastern) As
soon as they signed off, the noise went away. It could have been their
signal (very powerful) that was bleeding over. I was playing around with my
new Grundig S350 and am not sure if this is characteristic of this radio. I
have also read that this radio could be susceptible to images on some bands.

Thanks to all that replied. All of this is helping me learn about SWLing and
all its nuances. Cheers!
