Icom R-71A vs R-75
 

Hi folks, just wondering which is the better receiver for ute listening.
Presently I have an R-71A which I think does a pretty good job. The only
complaint I have is the lack of memories. 32 just aren't enough!
Is the R75 equal to the R-71A for pulling out those weak signals?
What would be a fair "private"selling price for the R-71A(stock with no
remote), should I decide to sell it? The radio is in excellent condition
both in appearance and operation.

I've tried both rx (stock R-75 vs R-71 + filter FL 44 A) side by side. I
agree with Gert's conclusions concerning handling and accuracy , but the
difference is'nt worth the money for selectivity and sensitivity which are
just a bit better on the unmodified R-75. The R-71 fitted with better
filters than the stock ones (have a look at e-Bay) is a very good rx. I'
wouldn't change mine.

As a new owner of an R71A, I have a question for you about use of the
replacement RAM board. How does the programming for the R71A get put into
the ROM on the new board? Is that something that gets done automatically
by the board, does one have to load it in with a programmer, or does the
board come with the R71A programming already in the ROM?

Hi Gerald,
my RAM board came pre-loaded with 250 frequencies. The other memories are
free and you have to enter them. Of course you can overwrite the pre-loaded
ones if you want. I'll try to e-mail to you the installation sheet . If your
address does'nt bounce ...

Thank you very much. The email shouldn't bounce, but then one never
knows for sure. What I was really wondering about was whether the
programming that controls the radio is already programmed into the ROM or
whether I would have to transfer that. Maybe my question doesn't
make sense. I'm new to this receiver and the expansion addon.

The personality of the radio is programmed into the new board. Once you
install the board, you don't have to worry about the memory battery dying,
and losing the radio's operating system. The code is programmed into
non-volatile memory (probably a ROM)

I already have this module installed in my r71 (bought it already installed
on ebay) but only have the 32 memories. Any ideas or directions on how to go
in and make the memory mod to 1024 instead of 32?
