Or just go to eBay and see it for yourself, and not post in a shortwave group
what everyone in here knows already.

I submit that nobody on ebay pays too much for anything. They pay what they
are willing to pay, and not a penny more. That amount may or may not be
more than what the person could have gotten the item for elsewhere.

A couple of years ago, I sold my Sony 2010 on eBay for WAY more than it was
worth. I was just trying to get my original money out of it. I started the
bidding at 1 penny and said no reserve. Apparently that made people go crazy
because there was a bidding war right to the very last second. By the time
the dust cleared, the radio went for more than $700! That was at least $300
more than I paid for it. The radio was in good shape, but it sure wasn't
worth over $700. Not to me anyway.

But if that buyer was happy, then I guess we all can be.

Exactly the way I see it. And remember, the final price is basically
determined by the person who wants the item _not_quite_as_much_ as the
person who won it.

I don't understand why some people like to complain about what other
people bid on ebay. My favorite ebay stories are the items I get for much
less than what I bid for them. :)

I love coming home from my local flea market with that PRO-43 I paid $5 and
looking on eBay to see them going for $100. Or the time I bought my near
mint RF-2600 for $20. Or the DX-440 for $20. Those are just a few examples
of MANY killer deals that can be had if you look in the right places. (using
eBay as a comparison) :)

On the other hand, I HAVE gotten what I consider a good deal on eBay. I
don't think $100 for a mint condition PRO-60 scanner is too much...

I recently sold a new in box Sharp mini disc on ebay for twice what I paid
for it on closeout at Sears 2 years ago. Who could guess that this
particular unit acquired a five star reputation and even used units are
going for over what they cost new?

I got a CD burner and never used the thing. The last 5 minutes of the
auction was QUITE exciting.

Most of my ebay experiences are nowhere near as exciting. :(

I've paid too much for some specialty Russian postage stamps because they were
virtually impossible to get, yet I got a set of 4 snow tires for only $1. It
all evens out in the end.

I understand these points of view--an item is ultimately "worth" what
a buyer is willing to pay--but I don't entirely agree in every
situation. The fact that somewhat is "willing" to pay a given amount
does not necessarily mean that they didn't "overpay" as well from an
objective standpoint. That's why I think the situations fall into two
camps: (1) those where a buyer appears to bid high for a particular
item because it has some value to that particular person over and
above some other buyer (and likely where the item has become something
of a rarity); and (2) those where the buyer is simply pretty dumb and
has in fact overbid for something that's availably for less elsewhere.
While I'm not into *complaining* about the people in the latter
category, I can see why others like to at least comment on them.
