Six Ideas for "Improving" on the CC Radio Plus CCRadio Plus

I would say that for the $160 'price' the CCRadio Plus could offer more features and truly be a better value for the money. 1. AM-SYNC - The CCRadio Plus can really use AM-Sync to live up to its claim of being the "Best AM Radio Made". 2. AM/MW Wide (7.5 kHz) and Narrow (4 kHz) IF Filters [ FM Wide (200 kHz) and Narrow (110 kHz) IF Filters ] - The CCRadio Plus can really use a set of two selectable IF Filters for both AM/MW and FM Radio Listening. Better Local Sound Quality and 'improved' DXing Capability. 3. AM/MW Local & DX Switch (-20dB RF Signal Attenuator) [ FM-Stereo & FM-Mono ] - The CCRadio Plus can really use a Local & DX Switch especially for the High RF Environments of Urban Areas. - The CCRadio Plus can really use a FM-Stereo (Local) and FM-Mono (DX) feature for overall better FM Reception. 4. Separate AM and FM Antenna Inputs [ AM/MW Antenna & Ground Terminals and FM/TV "F" Connector ] - The CCRadio Plus can really use real Antenna Inputs that actually work and are specifically designed for the separate Antennas requirements of both AM/MW (HI-Z 500 Ohms) and FM/TV (LO-Z 5 Ohms). 5. AM-Talk and FM-Music Audio Switch - The CCRadio Plus claims that it is engineered for the reproduction of the Human Voice. Better Audio Engineering is needed again to fullfil its claim to be the "Best AM Radio Made". 6. Dual Speakers to work with the AM-Talk (Single) and FM-Music (Dual) Audio Switch. - The CCRadio Plus can really use two matched Speakers that faithfully reproduce both AM-Talk (Single) and FM-Music (Dual) Audio Sound. ? I agree with everything you came up with, but I do have a couple mo (7) AT LEAST 20 memories for AM and FM (each). Five is totally inadequate. (8) Silent (but tactile) push-buttons (like the ones on my Sony SW07). The ones they have now have a LOUD double-click that is annoying to say the least. It defeats the point of quietly listening over headphones if there's a loud "KA-BUMP!" filling the silence every time you decide to tune a preset. (9) Stereo without headphones. The CC Radio is a nightstand radio. Widen it and put a speakers on each side. I loved my CCRadio for its gentle wake alarm, so no matter what, don't mess
with that. But the reason I got rid of it was the poor tuning with the knob. When I use a tuning knob, I want it to be exact and go up 10 kHz with each click. Sometimes it would go up, sometimes it would go down. It was real frustrating to me. And yes, I know I could have used the tuning buttons, but I like a good tuning knob, preferably switchable between 1 kHz and 10 kHz. And yes, at least 10 memories for AM and 10 for FM. Who needs 5 memories for weather and 5 memories for TV? There's only 7 weather frequencies and only 12 TV frequencies. You don't need to waste memories for TV and Weather. |

You won't get those extras for the original price, but for an additional amount, probably around $100, IN THE FUTURE, you will be able to have the following modifications done to your CCRadio: 1 - modified audio circuit that uses the 5-inch speaker to its potential by increasing the audio frequency response. This should make the radio sound much better on FM, and also improve the sound of talk radio. With separate bass and treble controls, a talk switch isn't necessary. 2 - modifications to increase the sensitivity on MW while REDUCING noise level. 3 - changing the bandwidth filter to one with better specs resulting in better sound AND better selectivity. 4 - the addition of an antenna trimmer knob which can make a big difference in reception of the desired station while helping selectivity. 5 - better looking set by changing the dull lighted display with a nice full blue light. My CCRadio is one currently being used as a test to fine-tune these modifications and I should have it back shortly. As soon as I get it back, I will report to this group the results, and if then available, how you can have the mods done to your set. I was told by Chris Justice that the modifications will make a HUGH difference in dx reception. I will then compare it with the Sat 800 using the Terk loop and sync detector and see which is better. |

Good luck with the mods, and I suspect, with Justice involved, that you will have one excellent radio. But, as someone who has always thought of the CCRadio as overpriced (one part hype to one part performance), I'd suggest that the -need- for serious mods to what is already a $160 radio only confirms my impression of the original. |

My suggestion for improvement: Put a handle on the damn thing! I have the original CC Radio, it's almost 5 years old now, very susceptable to the display getting messed up by static electricity (none of my other radios have this problem at all, my house is no more static-y than normal). The presets are all messed up, the 3 right most presets don't woerk at all, and if they do, they turn the alarm on! Jeez.... ---Ken |
Actually, they advertised the CC Radio mods for a short time on their site.
They looked nice -- red or blue displays, fine tuning knob, etc. However, the Crane folks got upset, and Radiolabs pulled the CC Radio mods to avoid more harassment. Frankly, I don't look for them to become available again. Gary apparently sent his radio in for the mods before they took the page down. (Hang on to that radio, Gary -- it may be a collector's item!) From my conversations with them, they are concentrating on the Super ATS-909's, their repair facility, and on selling a myriad of new products.
