MW DX Radio Still Planned?
 
Some months ago, there was a regular thread in here from some RF engineer who
was designing a high-performance MW receiver that would be available on the
consumer market. I think the guy was a ham (K9 or KE9 something or other?)

Is the radio still being developed, or was the project scrapped?

I hope it's still on - I made a "reserve" account for the purchase of it
:-)

Maybe he'll choose ten of us to get free "Beta Tester" rigs ;-)

That's a definite for sure. I've got all of the RF design done; I am just
waiting for our software person to be freed up, so he can write all of the
control/display code. I've gotten the overload point up to 140mV, and it
handles all of the signals in the Chicago area with not overload, when using
a 100 foot antenna.
For the past couple of weeks, I have been learning a new software package
called Protel DXP. I've just started creating all of the library symbols in
the past couple of days. After this happens, I will transfer the design over
to Protel.
I was hoping to have this radio hit the market this month, but we have a 3
million dollar project that has a higher priority.
I still need to work out the mechanical details for the packaging,
especially for the loop antenna.
Another project I have completed this month is a DDS based signal generator,
with AM capabilities. The boss was impressed with the design, so I think
(hope) that we will be marketing this item. Coverage is from 1kHz to 30MHz,
although that can be increased to 60MHz. It will have both keypad entry
shaft encoder for frequency.

Does it look like you're company might market a stand alone version of
the sync' detector in your MW receiver? If not, can we build our own
from your plans?

BTW- I'm looking for some PIN diodes for my R8B. It looks like some of
them in the front-end bandpass filters might have been damaged or become
leaky. This also happened to my SW8 several years ago while it was still
under warranty. Drake did the repair. What do you suggest for a good
PIN?

Are you using the TDA1072A receiver chip? That seems to be getting a little
rare these days.

That is a strong possibility. Once we get ahead on the big project, we will
work more on the radio / accessory details, including the Sync Detector.

The HP 1N5767s are a good bet. What is desirable for this application is a
diode with a long minority carrier lifetime.
The 1N5767 meets this requirement with its 1.5uSec lifetime. They are
available off the shelf from Newark Electronics. Digi-Key or Mouser may also
have them.

The TDA1572A is discontinued, but the TDA1572T (SMD package) is still
available. If they stop making that device, I will probably need to design
an ASIC that will fulfill this purpose.

I'm not sure about that one................I do have the two CD rom set with
the Drake manuals, so I will check them later on. They used to use a
Motorola TO-92 package type in the "7" series.
Anyway, you can't go wrong with the 1N5767....................they were used
in the KWM380, although there was an upgrade that some of the folks over
there used to do with some Unitrode PIN diodes, although I don't recall the
part#
