How long do you get on a set of batteries? I've never tried them in that
radio. I've been thinking of getting a 12v gel-cell like used in
emergency lighting for powering the set. They don't spill like regular
lead acid batteries.

You can get a sealed lead-acid 12V battery that are made for portable depth
finders, comes with charger too and usually only $20. A bit smaller than a
motorcycle batter.

Me either, and I've been a whole bunch of places. Where's your cabin? My
sister had a place in Balsam Lake, about an hour and a half drive from me.
Too bad she had to sell it when she moved to AZ.

I could probably live in northern California, but the median price of homes
out there is prohibitively expensive, plus I prefer to live in a place
that's been tectonically dead for most of the past billion or so years. Love
Flagstaff too, but it's very difficult to find homes for sale there now.

I love NW Wisconsin and spend a lot of time there in the summer and fall.
Especially the Apostle Islands. I go up there every year in the early
autumn, and usually camp somewhere on the way up, like in Siren or the Lac
Court Oreilles area. Now THAT is some beautiful scenery... Superior's south
shore... old lighthouses... Bayfield, one of the nicest Victorian-era towns
in the whole state... and cheese, oh yes, cheese from the Crex Meadows
dairies. Gotta love it.

Hey, good luck! Hope you get a bunch of them. I was down by Lake Pepin last
month and saw about a half-dozen bald eagles in the area. Walleye, now that
is some great eating-- for some reason, I've never had too much luck
catching them. Maybe it is because I try to avoid the premiere walleye lake
in central Minnesota, Mille Lacs, because it seems like every other
fisherperson and their entire extended family is on that lake from May to
November, and no one's telling where they're biting. Bah.

My star catch was a 7 lb. largemouth bass that I caught out of a lake just
north of Bemidji. That was some fun. It took 45 minutes for me to tire that
guy out, and I was only using 8 lb. test line! It bit me for my trouble.
Bass are great fighters, so much fun to catch, and they can be good eating
if you keep the smaller ones and cook 'em fresh. No scaling and just remove
the backbone, voila, you're good to go.

So many of my childhood memories have to do with fishing. You almost can't
help that if you grow up here. I was raised in St. Paul, close to the
Mississippi, so fishing the Old Muddy was a staple activity on many weekends
of our young lives in those pre-Internet, pre-VCR and pre-computer game
days.

We used to catch catfish, carp and buffalo fish out of the Mississippi.
Those things would bite on anything, and I mean anything, like even pieces
of tinfoil. My dad would lend us some of his fishing equipment (usually the
crap that got stuck to the bottom of his tackle box) but insisted that we
leave his good lures* alone if we were going catfishing. So we'd hop on our
bikes and start off downhill to the river, our fishing poles strapped to our
backs next to backpacks filled with lunches, pop, sunscreen, OFF bug
repellent, and a can of Green Giant corn kernals. We would string a bunch of
corn kernals on a hook, toss it into the river and voila, a big, ugly ten
pounder'd be on your line before you know it. After several hours of landing
big ones from the Old Muddy, we'd hop back on our bikes and head uphill all
the way home; sunburnt, mosquito-bitten and full of fish stories for our
folks. Life's good here, you betcha!

I've gotten a good week's use, with about 12 hours a day and headphones.
Turning on the dial lights really seems to suck the current out.
It's interesting- when I go on these little DXPeditions, I find
I don't have to crank up the AF gain to drown out TV RFI

to do with the batter life.

I've thought of doing just that, but I've been 'spearmintin' with
NiMH D cells, and they seem to last forever. Plus, they fit
inside the receiver, so that saves the space that would be taken
by another piece of kit. However, when I start taking QRP to

Bass are a fine eating fish, that's for sure. I grew up in Dubuque, Iowa,
on the Mississippi, and we used to catch whopping striped bass down
on the river, at the power plant discharge, and I remember very fondly
some nice fish dinners from our efforts.

That's precisely how I grew up. I can remember - no kidding - probably
3 or 4 summers when I fished at *least* half of the days of summer. Used
to catch my own nightcrawlers with a flashlight and bucket, every night
after (and sometimes during) a rain. Those are truly happy memories.

| We used to catch catfish, carp and buffalo fish out of the Mississippi.

I remember the day I lost my Dad's Lazy Ike Leopard Frog lure.
He was disappointed in me - I almost felt like crying. I think I was
twelve. I learned from that experience that, if I didn't buy it, and
I didn't work for it, I should keep my hands off of it. ;)

Another Dubuque memory: I must have been 12, and those were in the
good old days when kids could do just what you're talking about: Hike
or bike down to the river. I brought two cans of corn, opened one and
threw it in (I didn't know "chumming" was illegal then). I baited my hook,
and cast it into the area about 40 feet from the bank where the corn landed.
I seem to remember that Buffalo Carp weighed at around 40 pounds.
The tomatoes tasted mighty GOOD that summer! (Fertilizer)

Look, you're just not fully informed, and I can understand that. What is
proposed is simply something that is already going on in both U.S. and
Canada - arbitration, whose purpose is to help free the courts to deal with
more serious cases. There are already other groups doing this, and allowing
Islamic groups the same opportunity really changes nothing. It's
understandable that people who read only part of the reporting, or who rely
on the superficial VOA-like reporting on U.S. cable news channels are going
to be misled about what is really happening. It is NOT a situation where
fundamentalist Islamic law will become the law of the land. It's just a
dispute resolution mechanism, not really much different than having people
agree to go before a TV judge and to abide by that celebrity judge's
decision. The principle is exactly the same.

You've really gone over the top.. you don't WANT to know the truth, or even
another side of an issue. The poster is right, the situation that was talked
about in the article is precisely the same as someone going to Judge Wapner
or Judge Judy. Why is it that some people think that Sharia law
automatically means stoning? Our system of law is based loosely on the
Hammurabic Code, which was far more harsh than Sharia Law. The system here
will use only those parts of Sharia Law that pertain to business and family
relationships, and has no force in civil law, nor can they try criminal
cases.

Hi,

Actually Paul Martin is pretty good - much better than the last Prime
Minister (Chrétien). Martin did support Bush when he was under Chrétien's
thumb

If a majority of voting Americans are like you guys, no wonder there's a
moron in the White House.

Anybody can make war. The hard part is achieving political ends without
having to use war as the last resort. As an ex-military person, I can
understand the need for military action in some cases, but Bush's war is one
of naivety, agreed to by a simpleton president who is probably being
manipulated by a small core of right-wing extremists who have their own
agendas (perhaps involving the great profiteering involved in any war). Such
a man in charge of a superpower military arsenal is a dangerous thing for
both America and the rest of the world.

You know, nobody could have possibly even imagined the almost sudden
collapse of the Soviet Union.

Wrong. President Ronald Reagan envisioned it.

Me either, and I've been a whole bunch of places. Where's your cabin? My
sister had a place in Balsam Lake, about an hour and a half drive from me.
Too bad she had to sell it when she moved to AZ.

I could probably live in northern California, but the median price of

homes
out there is prohibitively expensive, plus I prefer to live in a place
that's been tectonically dead for most of the past billion or so years.

Superior's

south
shore... old lighthouses... Bayfield, one of the nicest Victorian-era

towns
in the whole state... and cheese, oh yes, cheese from the Crex Meadows
dairies. Gotta love it.

Jackie

My place is about 10 miles SE of Siren near Shell Lake.
