Voice of Guyana

We're hearing Guyana coming in strong at 0330 UTC on 3291.6 kHz here
in PR. SIO444. Announcer reading obituaries with funeral home music in
background and then "important" announcements followed for listeners
throughout the country and abroad. For example, So-and-so... we inform
you that your mother has died or so-and-so please report tommorrow at
magistrate's court, etc. S/off at 0400

Do they still do commercials? Some of the funniest I've ever heard were
Guyanese and I'm sorry I don't have any on tape. "Your smile can't be
pretty if you have cavities. The way to really fight them is with Colgate
MFP" Nice little song.

What UCT would that be for me in the EDST area......duh, I guess 11:30pm right?
He said 'UTC' which is UTC anywhere, right?

Give me a break, I've been up all night listening to the radio. :-)

By chance, when that Jim Jones was around (before he acquired the taste for
kool-aid), did he transmit on any bands, the Guyana thing reminded me of that.

What year did that go down? Anyone know?

Just one! But you may be thinking of French Guiana, which is also located nearby in
South America.

French Guiana is also the 'home' of Devil's Island... of Papillion fame.

There are even 3 Guyana's. Surinam used to be Dutch Guyana.
French Guyana (which is a French colony, capital Cayenne) is also home
of the European Space Agency ESA. In Courou the Ariana rockets are
launched.

I was travelling from Georgetown Guyana to Port of Spain Trinidad when the
news of the suicides came up. November 17/18 1978 was the date. Back in
Georgetown, after Jonestown, availability of fruits of vegetables
plummetted. Jonestown had been a big supplier to the markets. In Geo'twn
very little was actually heard about Jonestown until after the deaths.

Never heard of any broadcasts from Jonestown.
