Hallicrafters SX-100 sells for $1800.00 on eBay

I kid you not, it sold for $1800.00. I will admit, it does look nice
but $1800 dollars?

This sure seems to be way over priced.
What say you?

Well, the $1800 radio did have all it's knobs. Remember this:

I looked at the bidding, and it looks like a couple of guys got into a war
over this one. There's enough SX-100s around, and the loser on this can
find a nice one after he calms down.

It must be nice to be able to afford to pay 6 times what a radio is
really worth...Myself, I think you would have to be *seriously* brain
dead to pay $1800 for an SX-100. I thought the $700-800-900 that one
guy wanted was kinda absurd...But to each his own I guess. Those
radios are not *that* good. Not even close. Myself, I consider them
kind of crappy, and basically unusable for my needs, and that is no
joke. I really don't see the attraction. Why on earth would anyone
want to pay that much for what is a mediocre radio at best? Sure ,
it's in great shape, and it's kind of old and is collectable, but
$1800 bills is absurd to any normal rational person. Or should be
anyway...Actually, I don't really have a problem with it, as it's not
my money being spent, but what does bother me, is people start to
believe they are really worth that much to nearly anyone. Like I
mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I turned down one of those for free.
"I could still get it if I wanted it". But I have no real interest in
a semi-obsolete, fairly mediocre at best, boatanchor. It's inferior to
nearly any older radio I have, and not a one cost me anywhere close to
$1800. My old drake R4 is far superior to that old halliscratcher. Or
in my opinion anyway. Heck, I think my drake 2C is too for that
matter...And I'd feel like a crook to even think about selling my R4
for $1800. And it's a potential collectors item with serial # 0058 to
boot... :/ Delusions of frigging grandeur, or just plain more money
than brains, thats all I can say...:( Before E -bay came along and
gave everyone a chance to distort the value of things due to old farts
wanting relive their pasts AT ANY COST, I'd see those things a dime a
dozen at hamfests for 50-75-100 bucks, and they would still be lucky
if they unloaded them before the end of the day. The one listed did
look nearly pristine, as far as SX-100's go, but I still wouldn't give
a dime over $300 for it, and I'd have to think long and real hard to
even do that. And that would only be as a collectors item, as I have
no real interest in the radio itself due to it being an inferior
machine to my normal standards. OK for casual SWL use I guess, but
pretty crappy for ham use by todays standards... Heck, my 1948 RCA
console must be worth $2900 judging by what I see these days.
My drake R4, hummmm, $3600 ???. "It's twice the radio the SX-100 is,
and thats no joke. Thats how I can rationalize this" Drake 2C, hummm,
$2400 ??? $1200 extra for the 2CQ speaker/Q multiplier??? I've got an
old crappy national S-38 clone I'll sell for $795??? Anyone feel those
prices are out of line if I decide to sell? Or should I be slapping
the crap out of myself? "Autoslap®" Inquiring minds wanna know...BTW,
radio isn't the only thing E-bay bidders are silly about. Geetar
prices have gone through the roof in the same manner. Want to buy any
decent older geetar? Better get ready to bend over unlubed, if a
moneyed old fart wanting to relive his past gets into the bidding. Two
old farts in a bidding war? They do stuff like buy SX-100's for
$1800...Hahahahahh!!!!!!!!!

I think a lot of guys are nostalgic about the first receiver they had as a
kid, or for the receiver the always wanted as a kid but couldn't afford.
Now, they've got plenty of money and they just have to get it (especially if
it's in nice condition).

In some extreme cases, the bids may be phony and no transaction ever really
occurs.

Anyone who would pay $1.8k for an old ham
radio desperatly needs to have their head examined
by Dr. Phil on TV, so we can all laugh.

Somepeople might actually believe the SW investment advisors, and figure the
dollar will soon be worthless and we will all be in a barter economy any
minute now. Most of could make the stretch for fifty pounds of radio.

And you can't get that kind of investment advice with fifty pounds of gold.

I think there's more 'shill' bidding on Ebay than they want to admitt.

Hmmm............ interesting that the 1 bid winner of this one was also
bidding on the other one. Note also the -1 rating ;)

I noticed that, too. I checked a couple of the high bidder's completed
auctions, and he seems like a genuine radio collector.

There was an article about the rising value of collectible cars in the
Sunday paper here a month or so ago. The author made some exciting
predictions about how presumeably the value of certain cars would likely
explode in the next few years. I don't know if that's true or not, but I
did notice the author was an auctioneer for expensive collector cars.

I'm wondering if there's some sort of prediction sheet on the investment
value of old radios.
