I hadn't known what these things were called, but Google suggests that
the name, at least in the British fleet for lanterns used to send
Morse between ships, is "Aldis lamp."

I was hoping to find a picture of the big ones with the shutters
typical of WWII U.S. ships. Think: "Victory at Sea." Please, someone,
find me that image.
