Dan / NYC Hi Dan. I think it's a little big. I'd recommend the PL-200. Judah Smith did a good review of the PL-230, with pictures... http://www.radiointel.com/review-tecsunpl230.htm |
Hi Sanjaya: - So are the PL-200 & the PL-230 close electronically ?? Dan In article . net, "Sanjaya" writes: Hi Dan. I think it's a little big. I'd recommend the PL-200. Judah Smith did a good review of the PL-230, with pictures... http://www.radiointel.com/review-tecsunpl230.htm |

They both recharge batteries in the radio, but the YB-550 doesn't. I like the PL-200 because of its size... if you saw the pic I put in the Yahoo group you can tell its size relative to a Bic lighter... small. |

I have one. It's a good radio, not quite as sensitive off the whip as, say, the Degen 1102. Has surprisingly strong and good audio for it's size, which, BTW, is exactly the same as the 1102, just turned "portrait" instead of "landscape. Has only a single bandwidth. The backlight of the LCD is very dim, almost useless. Like the 1102, comes with batteries which charge in the radio. I bought mine from the same seller (and 2 Degen 1102s). He has good service. Dan Grundig S800, S650, S700, YB400, YB550PE Degen DE1102, Kaito KA1102 Drake R8, Radio Shack DX-440 E. H. Scott 23 tube Imperial Allwave in Tasman cabinet (1936) He should be able to pick up a Degen 1102 for about the same price. That would be my recommendation. -- Stinger |

Yeah, small / shirtpocket is good for walking around How does it work with an external antenna, btw...? The PL-200 has a 3 setting antenna gain. That's all I use, off the whip. Works great. But I'll test it with my random wire. |

Slight improvement in weaker stations. No difference in strong ones. It's a sensitive little radio, and I can see Judah's review of the PL-230 fitting the 200 exactly, except sound from the smaller speaker in the 200 is not as good. |

[snip] Roy, Dan... and other interested parties I am still able to d/l the Grundig YB-550PE manual here http://www.etoncorp.com/asp/downloadownersmanual.asp This manual is very useful in learning how the Tecsun PL-200 and PL-550 radios operate. The Grundig YB-550PE is identical to the Tecsun PL-230 (except the Tecsun recharges batteries in the radio). The Tecsun PL-550 (not to be confused with the Grundig YB-550PE) has Chinese lettering on the front, so another useful item for the Tecsun PL-550 is this English translation of the front panel by HongKongRadioer http://www.radiointel.com/Radpic/pl5...50-english.jpg It was graciously made available in the Yahoo Tecsun PL-550 group by Ulis Fleming. |
I have one of the Grundig versions of this radio. This is my "going to
sleep" radio. Like most radios, it has a sleep timer that can be set to whatever range you desire. But this one has very soothing sound and the volume fades a bit (but not too much) when a signal does, which makes easy to go to sleep by. It doesn't seem to generate as much internal noise as my 1102. And my Grundig is very easy to operate in the dark. Sure, it has a night light, but it only comes on when you press the light button on top of the radio. It goes off a few seconds later, or you can make it stay on indefinitely by simply holding the light button for a couple of seconds. The 1102, however, is much more difficult to operate in the dark. It has a very nice night light system, but sometimes I would rather not have the light come on any time a button on the 1102 is pressed. The light on the 1102 can be disabled, but it's really tough for me to navigate its tuning system without its light being on. |
