Kiwa Mods?

I am thinking of buying a new Icom IC-R75. I would like your opinions
on the Kiwa mods. How much do they help the R75? Thanks!

A lot of information about the R75 receiver in general, and your subject
specifically, can be obtained he

HI Julie:

The R-75 with Kiwa mods is reviewed in 2004 passport to world band radio;

- Iffen your handy with a soldering Iron, Phil has ooutlined many good mods on
the R-75 Yahoo Group, including upping the fidelity and taking out the A.M.
choke.

I just have a plain vanilla R-75; hooked up to a random Wire;
it's sensitivity / Selectivity are very impressive;

I had a modded R75 for about two years and, looking back on it, I'm not sure
the mods were worth the money. The audio mod did improve the audio quality,
but the synch mod was of little help. I don't think the synch detector on
the R75 worked at all before the mod, and after the mod it only worked
poorly.

I finally gave up on it, sold it, and bought a Drake R8B and I love it. I
have to admit that I miss the R75 because it really shines with ham/utility
signals and I've even thought about buying another one.

Hiya....

I have an R-75 with both the Kiwa audio and sync mods. I used the R-75 in
its stock form before the mods for a few months, so I know what the radio is
like with and without the mods.

With the audio mod, the R-75 has better audio definition. Just how much ???
It is kinda hard to quantify such an improvement so I'll say that ..... On a
scale from one to five, with five being the highest.... If the R-75 before
the mod has audio that rates as a "three" before the mod, it rates as a
"four" after the mod. It is a noticeable improvement, but not a miracle.

As for the synch mod. I REALLY like this mod a lot. I know lots of other
people don't rate it as such a great improvement, but I really appreciate
it. Before the mod, the synch hardly did anything. Now, it actually
works. On a signal with moderate to heavy fading, it holds the lock very
well and really cuts down on distortion. With the mod, it now "whistles"
when it starts to loose the lock. Something it never did before the mod.

No sych will do anything for you if you have a signal with major fade. At
that point, the best thing to do with any radio is to switch to ssb and use
ecss tuning. But, for moderate conditions, IMO, the Kiwa sync mod for the
R-75 is a great addition.

I'd recommend getting the mods done.

Michael
