Unbuilt Ocean Hopper

Here's an interesting kit. An unbuilt Knight Ocean Hopper, watch out for
the sticker shock:

I can only imagine where this one is going Steve. Here's my version- a lot
cheaper- and more stable:

But alas, it's still not an Ocean Hopper..

That's a darn nice receiver, Dale. What does it cover?

I looked at some of the bigger pictures on his site and the case does not look to be
in very good shape. Possible water damage?

Hi Steve,
I have never wound up the LW coil but the receiver is capable of
100KHz-30MHz. Like most regens, it can be a little finicky tuning, but still
lots of fun to play with. For serious work I use my version of Pete KE9OA's
HF RX:

How much does one of those run? Looks interesting.

Hi Steve,
Only available by building your own. Here's the link:
http://home.att.net/~n.gianakopoulos...act.html-.html
The nice thing about building your own is that you can incorporate the
features you need- AM sync, additional filters etc. And build it the way you
want. The RX is pretty much surface mount so quite robust. I used mil spec
switches, teflon wiring and all stainless hardware etc.
Pete did a very nice design job.

The guy is on glue.

It's a cute radio, but for the $800 range we've seen 2 NIB Drake
R4b's. And for the $1400 range, we saw a LNIB SX-100 Mark 1.

That aside, ur 59, good luck in the contest.

Being a Knight-Kit Ocean Hopper makes it kinda rare and being a complete
unbuilt kit makes it very rare. Eight hundred seems a bit high but
there are those who collect unbuilt kits and whoever bids on it will be
bidding because it is unbuilt and will probably keep it that way. Don't
ask me, I really don't understand it either.

Here's another Ocean Hopper up for bid. Already built, but looks very nice, and the
price (so far) is a lot less:

Typically, over the last 5-8 years, the Ocean Hoppers, built, in good
condition, with case and all five coils started out at just under $100
on ebay. Most needed the electrolytics replaced. During the first
couple years, the price drifted up to around $350 as the little
receivers established their cult status and all of us on nostalgia trips
picked one up to remember the good old days of our teens. The prices
have started to drift down a bit now, but a good one can still fetch a
few bucks if the right person wants it and has a few extra dollars to
spend.

My best deal was $75. Great shape with cabinet and all five coils. The
person had not used "Ocean Hopper" in the subject line, but had listed
it as a Marine Radio. In the text, he had typo'ed the name as "Hooper"
- sometimes, you just luck out!

Dave
