1170 (WWVA) West Virginia reception in NYC

The Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) prohibits listening to radio
signals not directed to you. Unless you are a WV-born native, you cannot listen
to WWVA. You ARE allowed to listen to local stations as long as you are within
their primary or secondary coverage area. This area can be determined by going
to the FCC Media Bureau website www.fcc.gov/mb and following the quick links
(shortcuts) at the upper left. Scroll down to "AM Query" click go, and search
for WWVA.

The ECPA doesn't apply to broadcasts or hams.

If Clear Channel gets their desire to move their 1170 station to the
Cleveland area, what will happen to Jamboree USA? AFAIK, save for the
Opry, this is the last live radio country music concert.

The first out of area MW station I heard in NYC at least 4 decades ago
was either WWVA or WOWO. WOWO, of course, is gone.

WOWO gone? That's funny, I just tuned over to 1190 and there they are.

Yeah, loud and clear here, too (I live not too far from dxace). Some
months back, a contributor referred to WOWO as a "blowtorch of the
Midwest" - always was, too - my first "out-of-state' catch as a boy was
WOWO.

Not much of a blowtorch at night anymore. As far as I know they drop power to 9800 watts
at night vs. the 50 kw during the day.

I spent a lot of fun time as a kid just up the hill from the WOWO transmitter site at my
grandparents farm.

Hahahaha. I love it.

West Virginia was formed from the western part of Virginia and did not
become a state until June 20, 1863. Since that act predates the
Protection of Decency in Radio Reception Act by 140 years, residents
of Virginia are "grandfathered" in and can listen to WWVA with no fear
of legal repercussions.

WWVA is one of the hugest flamethrowers in the eastern US and comes in
quite well here in northern VA at night. I'm not surprised it can be
heard in NYC. It can propbably be heard in Halifax and on the surface
of the Moon for that matter.

Thanks for the warning.

Not sure about the moon or Halifax but WWVA comes in quite well in Yarmouth
Nova Scotia at times.

What about people not born in WV? They cannot listen to a station
coming in on their radio? Wow, this regulation must keep the FCC
pretty busy. I am surprised they have not busted me for listening to
Cleveland (WTAM) at night, when I live in Wisconsin. I am sure they
were ready to pounce on me on those occasions when I got Boston or
Denver on my FM clock radio too. I probably turned it off just in
time...I'm sure they were encircling my house at the time!

Are you on good terms with your neighbors? Did they discover your real
name?

The FCC is probably looking through file cabinets full of snitch reports
right now.

I am sure they
were ready to pounce on me on those occasions when I got Boston or

Boston or Denver on a FM clock radio? That's serious D*ing. I suggest you
start running right now. Don't turn off your computer, don't even shut the
door. If you have alot of endurance, you might make it to the border. Try
to zig-zag.

I probably turned it off just in
time...I'm sure they were encircling my house at the time!

If the FCC sends you off to Abu Ghraib, don't bother packing any clothes.
You won't be needing them
