Newbie Question - Listening to shortwave on a Flight

Just wondering if you can get any reception around 35,000 feet and
whether or not you are allowed to bring a radio in your carry-on?

Thanks

: So long as security doesn't think it's a transmitter, you're
probably okay.
: Just make sure it's set to a local AM station when they make you
turn it on
: at the checkpoint. On the plane, it's probably not allowed on
during
: ascent and descent. If it's really huge, they might not let you
carry it,
: but if it's small one, they'll probably let you keep in your pocket.

It's a Degen 1103. Not small enough to fit into my pocket, but not
big either. I wouldn't want to keep it in my luggage as they will
probably want to open up the luggage. At least if I show them it works
then there shouldn't be a problem. But, I will call the airport to
confirm.

Does the same apply to cellphones?

Cell phones are forbidden to be used once the cabin door is closed and until
the plane has arrived at the terminal gate. Not sure what they're supposed
to be able to interfere with, though.

In any event, I'm not at all sure you can get a decent cell signal from
inside an aluminum tube at 30+ thousand feet. Maybe you can... who wants
to test it - any volunteers?

There appeared to be several on 9/11. 30,000 feet is a bit less than 6
miles, not at all out of the question for a line-of-sight signal with no
obstructions.
