Its unlikely they would hold their own as hostage. The Chechens have been fighting for their independance from Russia for ever and a day. They were an independant state then I think Stalin ran them all off in WWII? The Chechen are Sunni Muslim, and speak a Caucasian language. In 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed, 14 regions become independent nations again. Dzhokhar Dudayev elected president of Chechnya. Dudayev declares Chechnya independent. Russian President Boris Yeltsin refuses to recognize Chechen independence, sends troops. Confronted by armed Chechens, troops withdraw.
