Radio Nepal 250 watts...

Hiya...

Nepal has a shortwave station, Radio Nepal. According to Passport and a
few other lists, they broadcast in English:

02:15-02:25 UTC, Winter 5005, Summer 3230, 6100,7165

08:15-08:25 UTC, Summer 6100, 3230, 7165

14:15-14:25 UTC, Winter 5005, Summer 3230, 6100,7165

Sounds good, no ???

The problem is, they are only 250 watts. What do you say the chances are
that it can be heard anyplace in North or South or Central America ???

Hi Michael,

My 2003 Passport shows the 5005 frequency at 40 & 100 kW, but the latest
Domestic Broadcasting Survey (which I trust more) indicates 5 kw, and ex-100
kW. Hmm... interesting that they dropped their transmitter power
dramatically; probably a cost-savings move.

Irregardless of the power, I hear Nepal on 5005 occasionally, although it's
never very strong. I've had English on their frequency in the 1415-1425
timeframe, mid-winters. Best reception of Nepal for me has been on
DXpeditions to the WA coast.

I see the listing in 2003 Passport for 40 & 100kW. I remember an article
that I read on a DX'ing web site... I wish I could remember what it was I
saw... It said that Radio Nepal was cutting down their power, possibly going
back to how they did in when they first started up... With a small 250 watt
transmitter that would only cover Nepal itself. It is possible I
misunderstood the article I read. Perhaps they cut back on power, but not
all the way down to 250 watts.

I have tried many times to pull it in. I can see that there is a carrier
there at times as I use ECSS and I can hear the het as I tune up and down
from the zero beat.... I can also hear some very faint (I think) modulation,
but I can never hear it enough to ID it. So, I dont even know in fact if
the het I'm getting is from Nepal. I want to find out how much juice they
are actually using.

I have them QSL'd here several times on 5005 variable, audible usually in
December thru February or so as I recall.

It's Possible Michael:

My guess:
You first need an "open window" to that area;
Check out other transmitters in that or similar part of the continent..
Then
You need a quiet, quiet frequency and lots of antenna;
& a good receiver helps...

You'd be best to look for them in Nepali rather than English unless you are on
the west coast... they are on earlier than that in Nepali.

At present they seem to have 3 100 kw transmitters, an older Passport suggests
they may be running at 40 kw at times. I'm not even sure if they run more than
one at a time these days.

Passport should list a few email addresses, you might contact them to inquire.
