See what the old AC-DC 5 tubers are going for. Hallicrafters S-38
series, the 60's. Also, check your local thrift shops[I got a
Hallicrafters for six dollars at one].

If you get any of the more recent "portables", you might want to look
into an external speaker.

I picked up a Grundig S350 on sale at Macy's.com thanks to another post in
this newsgroup. Price was $69.99, and the audio quaility is great. The sale
ended Labor Day, but it could go on sale again. Also watch for clearances at
Radio Shack.

It's decidedly low-tech, but you should be able to get a good price on a
Radio Shack DX-160 with speaker. This is a fairly old unit, analog
dial, but it has excellent sound. I used to have one in my garage for
exactly the same reason. Wish I still had it!
